Concept: a gangster film spoof with a Polish in America. The catch? The boss speaks nothing but Polish and everyone else only speaks English. And the Polish is never translated even in captions. We just get these long elaborate conversations where we only understand half of what is going on. Bonus if there is a scene where someone has to translate what the boss is saying to a third party even though he understands English perfectly because power move.
Confession: I'm kind of worried that I'll never feel the same connection that I feel with Polish in any other language I choose to study. I'm worried that I won't have that feeling of pride and joy when I learn to speak my third language. I'm worried that it will just become a tool to be used in certain cases and not a part of a me. Polish is the language that connects me to my past and my family so that's why I think it's so special to me...the culture is literally in my blood and a part of me and my heritage. I don't know if any other language will come close to it.
Also, who wants to see a stack of all the books in Polish that I own before I pack them away and put them in storage?
I’m absolutely horrible at it but speaking Polish just makes me so freaking happy and I need to do it more for that reason alone but also so I can become less horrible but I don’t know how
Mmmmm Help me guys I’m having second (or rather third or fourth) thoughts about my school language yet again. I’m registered for Spanish right now but Latin is starting to gain more and more ground. And it’s at the same time as Spanish so I can exchange it easily....I tell myself that I don’t need to learn how to speak Latin so I can learn it on my own but the question is will I really? I have a hard time with motivation tbh. It’s much easier for me to learn if I’m in a class. I would have no second thoughts and just go with Spanish since it’s useful in my area but I’m planning to major in History.....with a focus on European history. I would love to be able to read the writing in the churches the next time I go to Poland and I really think it would help me if I do end up going for masters work and becoming a real historian but ahhhh I hate making decisions so much. (Edit:) Another point for Latin though is that who the heck teaches Latin? And who teaches Spanish? Hint everyone teaches Spanish so I could literally always just take a class at my local college or wherever whenever but the chances of taking Latin classes are more few and far in between.
So I went to a Polish wedding this weekend and my liking of Disco Polo has been reawakened and I want nothing more than to dance to it again
So...since I have about a month before school, I’m giving myself a 30 day challenge. I was going to start today, but I am in the middle of going through and organizing my book collection and packing it up so I’ll begin for real tomorrow.
Anyway my challenge for myself is to study language for an hour every day for the next 30 days. It doesn't have to be all at once, but by the end of the day the total time that I’ve studied has to be over 60 minutes.
The three languages I’m going to study in order of intensity are: Polish, Latin, and German. I plan on dividing them into chunks of 30, 20, and 10 minutes.
I’m going to spend 30 minutes reading my kid’s book in Polish until I finish it and then move onto my grammar book.
I plan to use the 20 minute chunk to learn from the Latin textbook that I bought at the library sale over the weekend.
And for the last 10 minutes, I’m going to start on the German duolingo tree. Hopefully I’ll finish it and move on to getting my Polish tree golden again.
In addition, I plan on spending more time here....at least enough to keep the queue filled up and make a couple of my own post but we shall see.
Long story short, I hope to make use of the summer time that I have left to study the languages I haven’t had a chance to practice. Hopefully, I’ll be able to do it since an hour a day isn't really a lot of time.
How you think chatting with your native friends will work: You are able to form sentences with a little bit of effort. You make a few mistakes every now and again but they correct and encourage you. You enjoy having an opportunity to practice using your target language.
