Amongst language stereotypes, one I find puzzling is that Finnish is musical. I’m pretty sure people who say that have only ever heard Finnish in Nightwish songs.
The truth is that Finnish is probably one of the flattest language that exists. Its prosody is even flatter than that of French which is quite a feat.
And it’s probably for that very reason that it can be used so freely in songs, because there’s little constraint in the underlying prosody of spoken language.
To my surprise, full of intimidating fricatives and stops as it seems, spoken Hungarian is quite bit more melodious as spoken Finnish !
