October 3, 2021 - Bull-headed Shrike (Lanius bucephalus)
Found in parts of North and South Korea, China, Japan, Russia, Hong Kong, Taiwan, and Vietnam, these shrikes live in open areas including farmland and the edges of woodlands. Hunting from a perch, they eat mostly insects, as well as small vertebrates and sometimes fruit in the winter. Like other shrikes, they often impale their prey on spikes. They build open cup-shaped nests from twigs, bark, moss, leaves, grass, rootlets, hair, and other materials in bushes or other plants where females lay clutches of two to six eggs.
