thumbnail/concept sketch i shambled together last night for a future irulan illustration — it will be more of a fashion illustration / costume concept than anything else, as i was mainly focusing on the cut of the dress and how i imagined the fabric to flow. (have i mentioned how deeply fascinated i am by the canon fabrics in dune?)

i gave her little silver ram horn pieces in her hair, a bit like a laurel crown, because i felt this outfit was more giedi prime than kaitan — and of course house harkonnen's animal is a ram (yes, or a gryphon, but it depends on who you ask, and i feel like the ram is more feyd-adjacent, being that he is from lankiveil. and lankiveil is very icelandic in my mind. and i like sheep — you can take the girl off of scafell pike but you can't make her draw a gryphon)

Underneath it all, the mundanity of real life and the existential turmoil inside his head, Paul realised that he was tired, terribly tired, the kind of tired that lives in your bones and makes your teeth ache. Lankiveil

A largely self sufficient albeit austere planet, Lankiveil was for centuries an independent world not unlike Ix or Bene Tlielax that existed on the fringes of the Imperium. The locals subsisted largely on meat from the large natural fauna occasionally eating rare and uncultivated plant life as well. Sensing opportunity from the nearby planet of Giedi Prime, the Harkonnens forcefully took control of the planet so they could maximize hunting and selling of the Bjondax whales for their fur.

The Harkonnen occupation of Lankiveil could arguably be seen as a testing ground for their later brutal tactics on when spice-mining on Arrakis. However unlike Arrakis where the local Fremen were often dismissed or hunted for sport, the people of Lankiveil were initially valued because of their skills hunting the local whales. Whale fur harvesting was seen as so reliable and self sufficient that Abulard Rabban was given a post on the planet precisely because it put him out of the way. Allowing him authority without running the risk of having the resources to stage any kind of meaningful power grab.
