lan peppered enzan's face in kisses, a grin on his face. "i loooove you, enzan!" he hadn't seen his boyfriend in awhile because of both of them being busy with school. but lan finally found time to surprise him with a visit! "i haven't seen you in forever!" in actuality it had only been a couple of months, but lan would always exaggerate. "i missed you so so so much!"

                                  enzan felt his face heat up at lan’s words. he was normally used to lan’s loud personality, but it was different when he was declaring his love for him. he couldn’t say he hated it, though. it just made his heart pound harder in his chest. 

                                                “ i’m sure you were fine. ” he rolled his eyes. enzan had actually missed lan a lot. it felt like forever to him, but he wouldn’t say that. he loved lan, loved being with him and loved the sense of normalcy that he brought with him. lan made him feel like a teenager, not a college student training to take over a multi-billion zenny company. enzan let himself smirk, loosely wrapping his arms around lan. “ unless there was some sort of net trouble. then i don’t know how you could’ve made it without protoman and me ... ”

when lan found himself under the mistletoe with enzan, he felt his cheeks heat up. why was he flustered? "uh--" what was he supposed to do? he had to kiss enzan now, right? he had never kissed anyone before. he stared at enzan for a few more moments before he moved to quickly kiss his cheek. for whatever reason, his heart was racing now. he was the one that kissed enzan, and yet lan was feeling even more embarrassed. he had to get out of here. "w-well gotta go!"

                                  lan was giving him a strange look, and enzan couldn’t figure out why. he was fine up until a moment ago. it wasn’t as though he’d said anything strange. “ what is it -- ” but just as he said that, lan spoke up. it was an odd moment, where they just stared at each other, lan with a look enzan had never seen on him, and enzan with confusion and concern. then lan did something enzan didn’t expect -- he closed the distance, and for a moment enzan thought ... but no, he didn’t do that, he placed a kiss on enzan’s cheek. still, it was just as surprising. and embarrassing. he felt his face heat up and there was nothing he could do to stop it. he couldn’t say anything, couldn’t do anything, he was frozen as lan made his escape -- then realized there was mistletoe above them. 

                                               for a reason he knew too well ( but didn’t want to admit ), his heart felt heavy.

‘ i only ever wanted to make you proud ’

                                   “ you have. you’ve made me the proudest big brother, lan. ” it’s times like these hub is grateful that he was gifted one of the more powerful copybots. he hates that it’s at iris’ and colonel’s expense, but he’s grateful to them nonetheless. because he can cup lan’s cheeks in his hands and feel the warmth of his skin and know what it’s like to touch a human being again. 

                                                  “ you’ve done so much for so many people and you’re still so young. you’ve made so many people happy. you’ve saved so many people. ” you saved me, even if you haven’t realized, but as usual, it goes unsaid. “ you’re a light in this world, lan. don’t let anybody make you think any different. ”

"enzan!!!" lan called out to him, but got no answer. he had come all the way to ipc to see him, but he was getting ignored! "enzan! enzan! enzan!" he began poking at him, trying to get some reaction out of him. still nothing. he pouted and decided to sit in enzan's lap to get his attention. "you've been doing work since i got here a half hour ago. that's so boring. aren't you bored? let's do something!"

                                 “ ... a half hour is not that long. ” he’d been ignoring lan, even with the incessant poking -- until lan decided to sit on his lap. now it was physically impossible to do anything, and lan ... lan was on his lap. ( he was warm. ) “ we can’t do anything if you’re on my lap. ” enzan said, even though he had no intent on doing anything with lan regardless. he had work to finish, and lan was the one who came to ipc unannounced. 

                                               “ get off of me. ”

 lan, did you hear the rumor

                                “ ... oh, never mind, i don’t want to spread it. ”

"hub... " lan moved closer to his brother, wrapping his arms around him tightly. he was glad hub was in the copybot right now. he was glad he was able to touch him. to know that he was really here. "don't... don't do that again. risking your life like that... what if... what if... " what if i lost you again? he couldn't stand the thought. even if he had been repaired before, lan didn't want to lose his brother again. he could feel tears welling up in his eyes. "please... think of yourself more."

                               “ lan ... ” he was asking hub to do the impossible. he wouldn’t just risk his life, he would die if it meant saving lan. if it meant saving the world. giving his life back to those who gave him a second chance was proper compensation. but most of all, it was his selfish desire, wanting his brother to live a happy, full life. lan was reckless, got himself involved in dangerous situations. dangerous situations seemed to follow lan and hub wherever they went, too. it wasn’t the first time hub was ready to die for lan. it wouldn’t be the last, if such a situation came up again. 

                                            still, hearing lan speak like that, so small, as just a boy who wanted his brother ... it broke hub’s heart. he held lan tighter, pulling him in as close as possible. “ it’s okay. everything’s okay now. we’re both safe, okay? i won’t let anything like that happen again. ” it was such an impossible promise, but hub would do everything in his power to ensure he wouldn’t have to sacrifice himself again. 

                                             “ i love you, lan. i promise i’ll keep us both safe. ”

‘i let you down.’

                                 “ don’t say that  ”

                                               hub didn’t want lan to feel like he couldn’t share his feelings, but even more than that, he didn’t want lan to feel as though hub’s decisions were his own fault. if i were a better operator, if i were a better brother, he imagined those thought were going through lan’s head. he knew because he felt the same way -- if i were a better navi, if i were a better brother, then i wouldn’t have to take such drastic measures to protect him. 

                                              “ i will always act to protect you. that doesn’t have a reflection on you, lan. i don’t want you to have to make those decisions. ” he never wanted to put lan in a position where he had to decided who lived and who died. he wanted lan to stay idealistic and optimistic forever, though hub’s pretty sure his actions have been counter-intuitive. “ you haven’t let anyone down, least of all me. i’ve protected you because you’ve done so much good and the world needs you in it ... ”
