March to Camelot 2025 #5: trial
"By my faith," he said, "that is my love. Now I don't care if I am killed, If only she forgives me. For I am restored, now that I see her."
Marie de Fance's Lanval
i always forget how insane lanval is as a story like guinevere lies to arthur about lanval calling her ugly and trying to have an affair with her and so arthur brings lanval to court but he’s not even on trial for the alleged advances on guinevere he’s just in trouble that he said his girlfriend is prettier than her after guinevere called him gay??? he gets acquitted bc his gf shows up and everyone is like “oh yeah you’re right she’s way hotter than the queen you’re free to go” ??? what kind of clown ass legal system
queen Guinevere calls Lanval gay

random screenshots from lanval (2011)
and when I say 'random,' I mean 'these are just moments where my screen happened to freeze' random. seriously, every shot in this movie is simply that fucking gorgeous. it does an amazing job adapting the lai too– and on a shoestring budget no less!!!
you can watch Lanval (2011) for free here, thanks to the benevolence of @queer-ragnelle. go forth!
"I'll be at your beck and call, To fulfill whatever needs you Have, wise or foolish—you are above Me, my only commandant. All others for you I abandon. From you I never want to part."
— Marie de France, Lanval
you know how in american sitcoms people say they have a partner "in canada" when the implication is that they don't exist, well something something adaptation of lanval where lanval keeps his magical lover secret as he is charged with doing because guinevere you can't see her she's in canada. everyone seems to understand what canada means. this is the only break from the medieval setting and after this all of the setting details go back to regular.
