Okay I'm not sure if any of you remember BBC's Robin Hood with Jonas Armstrong, Harry Lloyd, Keith Allen etc., but I just watched the last episode of series 2 (SPOILER when Marian dies) but with audio commentary by a few of the actors.

For most of the series Allan had been acting as the right hand of Gisborne and was actually another antagonist for the outlaw group, so ofc he wasn't in on their plans and schemes against the sheriff. There was one episode where they wanted to send a message to the king via a trained bird called Lardner. Allan thought the bird was killed but Lardner actually survived and delivered the message. So when Allan came back at the end of the series the crew revealed their plan to him and he was very impressed. At the end of the episode Djaq and Will say their goodbyes and we see Allan in the background talking to the Birdkeeper. Now one of the actors in the audio commentary said that they actually shot a scene where Allan was given Lardner as a present, but the scene was cut. During one of the last shots, when they walk towards the sunset, you can actually see Allan carrying a bird cage, though it seems to be empty (maybe Joe was moving around too much and they couldn't let the bird go through that stress). Nevertheless I just thought this was so sweet and because I hadn't heard of that before I just had to share it with someone.

In general I think the show could've done so much more with Allan's character. All the scenes he was in in series 2 (especially those with Marian or other gang members) just perfectly portrayed the fact that he is not just a one sided character but also has many layers. He had a redemption arc but his lack of scenes with Guy in series 3 was just a wasted opportunity to show his AND Guy's growth as a character.

I'm sorry for this "rant" but I've come back to this show multiple times now because it's part of my childhood and is generally a very enjoyable show (it also helped me with my english skills). And I just love Allan A Dale in this show. :) sorry not sorry

Robin Hood Rewatch: 2x09 Lardner's Ring

Robin kills one of Gisborne's guards before the opening credits even start. Maybe I should have been keeping track of Robin's kill count this season.

Oh no wait! He lives, despite an arrow through the chest - and toddles off to tell Guy all about the situation, but conveniently forgets to tell anyone that Marian was there.

Marian calls Robin out on his quipiness, and admittedly the hedgehog gag was bad.

The Fool is Mathew Horne of Gavin & Stacey fame, and I am absolutely shocked there wasn't an in-joke, not even a what's occurring (not this character, but still).

Let's be eternally grateful it wasn't James Corden in the role.

Instead we get a painful monologue that could be period appropriate, since it's painfully unfunny.

This was my reaction too.

Robin just standing there while Marian builds the grave is wild. They are, however, on the same page for perhaps the first time, agreeing that Robin cannot do as he was ordered and return to the Holy Land.

I actually think the proposal scene is quite sweet, the bow metaphor notwithstanding. I do wish there had been a bit more time between the truce last episode and the coming to terms in this one, since Robin and Marian didn't really reconcile all of the issues between them - there was real meat in that storyline that the writers glossed over to get Marian back to the castle status quo asap.

Ah, so Vaisey actually kills the wounded guard before he can really say much, so they covered their bases this time.

John and Much sparring as Robin and Marian return to the camp - still no sign of the goat though.

"We were burying a corpse in the forest." LOL

There are indeed bee hives behind Will and Djaq in Locksley, so the cover story checks out, but this is the first overt hint of Will/Djaq since 1x08.

"It's a very important job Much!" I just like this delivery from Anjali Jay - actually this whole scene, and her distress at the thought that "the Sultan" may have been captured by Richard. This does not seem to be referring to Saladin, but I think we've established that this show does not follow the actual history of the Third Crusade so whatevs.

I wish they'd given more character work to Djaq because her trauma must be immense - her brother dying, taking on his identity to survive, being sold into slavery, and fighting alongside men who once were her enemy. She wants Richard to return to England as much as Robin does, but because it will stop his pillaging, and it must have been a grim moment to think that he may have succeeded.

Robin again pulls of the non-fatal chest shot with another guard, so I guess we can chalk it up to a deliberate skill shot (however improbable without puncturing a lung).

The Much-Djaq-John writers club is a nice little bit of levity, and I love Djaq with her sword and Much with his spoon.

Marian's first instinct is to return to the castle, and she's right she can do more good there - the gang has been somewhat hampered not having a spy in the Sheriff's ranks. It also indicates that perhaps Marian is still chafing under Robin's authority - while their relationship is now stable, she wants more than just to be another member of the gang, she wants the freedom to act alone, in the way she feels best.

"Now tie me up!" Heh.

"We can see the famous Robin Hood for what he is - a common coward, using an innocent woman as a hostage." Fine words from a man who almost cut an old woman's finger off earlier that day.

Robin giving Marian a stolen ring never really sat right with me.

But it's also progress - Robin proclaimed earlier that together they were stronger, he has to trust Marian when she says she can protect him better from the castle.

It's also the first time Marian tells Robin she loves him.

All in all a bit of a middling episode after a string of very good ones, but it gets the job done - Marian back in the castle and (yet another) message to the king.
