Kent is driving home from the rink when Lardo calls him. He picks up as he uses his turn signal.
“Hey babe, you okay?” he asks immediately, since he can’t remember the last time they called him.
“I’m fine, I just need you to pick up some ibuprofen, please,” they say, matter-of-fact, but Kent can hear the undercurrent of pain in their voice.
“That doesn’t reassure me that you’re fine,” he points out, but flicks his turn signal for the other direction and changes lane after a brief glance to his side mirrors.
They let out a sigh that would have had Kent tensing even a week earlier, but he can recognize it as reluctance instead of annoyance.
“It’s— it’s a cup day, okay?” Lardo says, and yeah, there’s some irritation now, but Kent doesn’t feel too panicky about it, so that’s nice.
“Ah,” Kent says, racking his brain for something better to say. “Okay, I’ll be home soon with the ibuprofen.”
“Thank you,” they say, before hanging up.
He pulls into the parking lot. Once he’s in the store, he makes a beeline for the pharmacy section and grabs the requested ibuprofen. He heads to the checkout before realizing he might as well grab a couple of other things they’re running out of as well.
When he gets to the door of their apartment, he realizes he’s carrying too many bags to turn the key in the door, so he sets some down. Before he can straighten up, the door opens, and Lardo’s raised eyebrow greets him.
“Dude, I know we needed groceries, but I wish you come straight home,” they say, taking in the bags he’s holding.
“Babe, I don’t do anything straight,” he says, fishing out the bottle of painkillers and handing it over. They give him a tiny smile before disappearing into the apartment, leaving him to bring in the bags.
When Lardo emerges from the bedroom, they’re greeted by what looks like the complete inventory of a candy shop, albeit one that one stocks their absolute favorites. They’re speechless for a moment.
“I also grabbed the heating pad from the bathroom and set it up in the living room, and bought that movie you like off of Amazon,” Kent says quietly.
Lardo’s quiet for a moment, and Kent begins to fidget.
“What’s wrong, did I– did I get the sugar-free version of something, I thought I had been careful, but I can go back,” Kent starts.
“No, dude,” Lardo cuts him off. “I’m just mad because I can’t propose at game night next week now.”
Kent’s jaw opens and shuts a few times before he manages to put himself together.
“Are you– are we breaking up?” he asks timidly.
Lardo doesn’t answer him, just turns around and goes into the bedroom before returning with something covered by a red cloth. They pull off the cloth to reveal a small lacquered box.
A small lacquered box about the same size and shape as a ring box.
“Are you?” Kent breathes, and Lardo drops to one knee.
Lardo opens their mouth, and Kent’s blurting out a “Yes!” before any words come out.
“Jeez, Parson, let me say the words first,” they snark.
Kent ignores that and pulls them up in an embrace. They laugh as Kent peppers their face in kisses.
“Better let go of me before the ice-cream melts, fiance.”
