This photo of Jo, my niece, was taken when she was 21. I remember her as a charismatic young woman, the kind who would blaze her own trail and make a unique mark on the world. Except, it didn’t work out that way. In 1997, she got a job as cabin crew with a small airline flying a route to East Africa. She was given Lariam, an anti-malarial drug, which can cause rare but well-documented neuropsychiatric side effects, such as anxiety, depression, hallucinations and psychosis. These symptoms hit her hard and have never abated. She cannot be cared for by family, as her paranoia makes her unmanageable, her fits of terror so overwhelming that a hand extended in help feels to her as if it conceals a weapon. She is now in her forties and living rough in London, delusional, isolated, and desperately fearful. My sister is trying to get her into the Cardinal Clinic, a private psychiatric hospital in Windsor. It offers the safe environment and ongoing specialist therapy that the NHS has been unable to provide. However, for a single mum on a state pension, the cost is prohibitive.
