Gear Guts: The Inner Workings of DIY/Experimental Gear is happening on Friday at Larkin Arts 3-4!! Speakers include Elliott Downs, Kim McMasters, and Travis Thatcher!!!
Gear, and the culture surrounding it hold a less obvious role in DIY music, but gear is just as crucial as show bookers and record labels. This panel will highlight the role of an artist’s electronic tools and how gear can limit, encourage, or otherwise influence the music we make. In addition we will discuss the intersection of gear culture and DIY ethic, how artists make great music with limited or zero gear, and how musicians can manipulate their tools to produce unheard and unique music. Entire worlds of sound are waiting to be discovered in nontraditional instruments – stompboxes, synthesizers, and circuits. We just have to bend them in the right direction.
