“Did you actually think I’d forget?” Lark said with an apologetic smile. She may have taken most of the day to get away from work, but she was there now. “Happy birthday.”
“Now this may be a little tough, but try to block me,” Lark said, raising her fists in the starting stance.
“Freeze!” Lark shouted as she rounded the corner, aiming her gun at the only other person in the room. “You’re one mistake away from dying where you stand,” she said. “Explain what you’re doing here?”
“Okay, now followed the light,” Lark said as she watched the other’s eyes. “Well, you don’t appear to have a concussion.” Which was good news. “But seriously, what were you thinking, going in there on your own?”
“I wanted to make sure you were safe. You really had me worried,” Lark admitted.
“Hey,” Lark said as they started to walk away. “Don’t you dare walk away from me without a proper kiss goodbye.” She reached out and pulled them in by their jacket.
“It just feels really shitty, to be the secret girlfriend.”
Lark was at a loss for words, which didn’t happen often. When she told the other that she never went to her own prom, the last thing she imagined was for them to remember. It was all there, everything she ever told them she had missed out on. The photos on the wall, the balloons in her favorite colors. The venue had even been chosen with care. It was in that building that they two of them had met. A mutual friend had thrown a party there. Lark would never have guessed that she would meet the love of her life at that party. “I. . . I can’t believe you did all this.” She turned back to the other, her heart pounding in her chest, when she noticed that they were down on one knee. “Oh my god.”
