Venice Beach, lunch at Larry's
We met our travel companions from Chicago at their Los Angeles hotel with the afternoon to kill before our flight. It was a fairly short, 15 minute, drive to Venice Beach. The day was hazy but warm so it was perfect to walk around and people watch. We walked down onto the beach and even put our toes in the cold February water. But the boardwalk was the place to be! All kinds of people to watch from old hippies to body builders! Cheesy shops selling tourist crap and food stands selling pizza, hot dogs and other snacks easily eaten while standing. We were getting hungry ourselves but wanted a place where we could sit, enjoy our meal and maybe a beer or 2. We were already officially on vacation! We had to veer off the boardwalk but we quickly found a few restaurant choices. We settled on Larry's, which turned out to be just what we needed. It seemed to be a pretty popular place, so we did have to wait about 15 minutes to get seated. They had a nice selection of beers, of which we had a few. To start, we shared an order of fried asparagus, which were perfectly fried and cooked al dente. Just enough for each of us to have one spear and a little more. We tried a few different items for mains and shared them. Burgers seemed to be a specialty so we had one. It was thick, juicy and delicious! The fries were medium thickness and came with 3 different sauces. Fries were crisp and very hot, just out of the frier. Second we got a couple of their small (10") pizzas. We tried one veggie with Brussel sprout leaves and the other was meat lover. Both were very good, with the veggies being lighter and the meat more filling, if a little greasy. But the highlight for me was the tuna tartar fish tacos. It was an appetizer size, offering 3 small tacos. They were loaded with fresh tartar, avocado, cilantro and a spicy mayo! The shell was crunchy and the filling was fresh and delicious! Everything was great but the tacos were definitely my favorite!! We did make a quick stop to wander Marina Del Ray as well since we still had time to kill before heading to the airport. If you like checking out how the other half lives, it us worth a quick stop. But Venice has much more to offer if you don't mind getting jostled around by the crowds. If you do hit Venice, have lunch at Larry's. The food is excellent and reasonably priced! Service was prompt and we only had to venture a short distance from the beach to enjoy it. Now on to Australia!! Have a great day!!
