In celebration of my favorite filmmaker Jonathan Demme, born on this day in 1944, here are his movies he directed on DVD and blu-ray in my movie collection: Caged Heat, Crazy Mama, Fighting Mad, Last Embrace, Melvin and Howard, Stop Making Sense, Something Wild, Swimming to Cambodia, Married to the Mob, The Silence of the Lambs (I have the DVD that Mr. Demme signed for me in 2002 and the blu-ray), Cousin Bobby (the DVD was converted from VHS), Philadelphia, Storefront Hitchcock, Beloved, The Truth About Charlie, The Agronomist, The Manchurian Candidate, Neil Young: Heart of Gold, Jimmy Carter Man from Plains, Rachel Getting Married, I’m Carolyn Parker, Neil Young Journeys, Enzo Avitabile: Music Life (a rare press screener), A Master Builder, Ricki and the Flash, and Justin Timberlake + The Tennessee Kids (a For Your Consideration Emmy screener).
Not pictured are the TV shows, shorts and music videos he directed as well as Citizens Band (I have it on digital), Haiti Dreams of Democracy (it’s hard to find), Neil Young Trunk Show (it was released theatrically, but has not been released on DVD or digital), Kenny Chesney: Unstaged (it streamed live on YouTube, but was not commercially released), Line of Sight (a never aired or released TV movie for AMC) and Another Telepathic Thing (also not commercially released).
I guess you could call this collection my Pandemic project as I chipped away at purchasing and tracking down these movies over the last few years. I’m a huge fan of Mr. Demme and in completing my collection I also watched or re-watched all of his films in order. Such a diverse filmography and a tremendous influence on me!
