Redemption Round - William
Sorry I am so late posting, but better late than never! (I think we are still doing “Last Visits” in the Redemption Round, right?)
@ratracechronicler @concealeddarkness13
I hope you like it!! :)
Last Visit
William tapped his fingers on his knee as he waited for the peacekeepers to come and escort him to the train. He studied his hands- they were streaked with jagged white scars. The minutes dragged on and on. Boredom and a lack of a clock made him lose track of the time- he could have been sitting there for a few minutes or an hour. The walls and ceiling of the room were grey- no windows. Two hard chairs sat in the middle. William didn’t like either, so he sat on the floor. What was Sadie the female tribute doing? Had her family come to wish her luck? To say goodbye, amidst tears and half hopes? Whatever she was doing, William didn’t think she was alone. She seemed like the kind of person who would have someone by her side.
“Good morning, sir.” William heard the peacekeepers guarding the door snap to attention.
“Good morning. Has he had any visitors?” William stood when he heard that voice. Hunger Games, Rebellions, it didn’t matter - he’d never forget that voice. But why was he here? It surely wasn’t to be a shoulder to cry on or to wish him well.
“No sir, he has not.” the guard said.
“Figures. Open the door.” The knob squeaked as the door swung open to admit Assistant Chief of Peacekeepers Ryan Greyson. He wore his peacekeeper uniform and had taken his helmet off. He smiled at William. If a reptile could smile, that’s what it would look like. “What a pleasant morning! I notice you haven’t had visitors.”
“Wish I had less.”
“Ah.” Greyson grabbed one of the chairs and sat. He didn’t say anything, just sat there with a smug expression. Of all the people in the world to come gloat, of course it’d be him. “Did you know I was happy when I heard you were still alive?” Greyson asked, nodding. “Yeah. Cause seeing you die once was nice, but twice - well, I thought it was my birthday!”
“What do you want?”
“I want to be the last person you see from this district.” Greyson said. William couldn’t look at him without seeing them. Their eyes dull and their faces pale. Dead eyes. Each one just as dead as they were when William had killed them on Greyson’s orders. Just balancing the books, Greyson had said. Cleaning up the district. William tried to block them out. He looked down at his clenched fists with a grimace.
“You know,” William said, slowly, “I wouldn’t mind if I did you the same honor.” Before Greyson could react, William had lunged at him and had his hands around the peacekeepers’ throat. Both of them and the chair hit the floor with a clatter. William didn’t let go. He knew he wouldn’t make it to the games, couldn’t help in the rebellion. Not if he succeeded – but he also didn’t care. He barely noticed Greyson scratching at his hands, the fingernails going across old scars and creating new cuts. Someone was yelling, and hands tightened around William’s arms and pulled him off. Two peacekeepers dragged him to the other side of the room as another went to help Greyson, who pushed him away angrily. He stood, clutching his throat and his chest heaving. With a snarl, he punched William in the gut. William doubled over and grunted in pain.
“William, you better hope you die in the games.” Ryan hissed. “Because if you come back here, I’ll kill you with horrors even the Arena couldn’t produce.”
William grinned.
“You couldn’t fight me when I was a trainee. You couldn’t even handle me when you were giving me orders. You still need your lackeys to protect you now, so no, Ryan. You better pray I never come back because if I do…” William straightened so he could look him in the eye. “I will put you in the same grave as all the others.”
He leaned in close, so he could whisper in his ear.
“Just balancing the books, boss.”
