What Makes Students Memorable To Teachers?
The negative and positive ways students have been remembered by teachers throughout their careers.
By: Shaylin Bogart
As of 2026 there are roughly 100 teachers currently employed at Redwood High School, and there are 4,468 students that attend Redwood High School so clearly there are a lot more students than there are teachers.
Which begs the question, which students get remembered and which ones do not?
Mr. Jonothan Woodbury Photo Gigantea
Mr. Nick Miller, the AP Lit, Photograph, and Journalism teacher here at Redwood said "Like, personally, what sticks with me is not who you are but it's how you make me feel."
Mr. Jon Woodbury has a similar sentiment, he says that even though he may not always remember a name or a face, he tends to remember how students made him feel rather than the student's academic achievements. He says names are made up anyway.
The general consensus from teachers is that students tend to be remembered due to the way they made them feel.
but of course the actions of the student will change the way the teacher feels about them and if they'll be remembered.
According to Ms. Amanda Fariss, an English teacher at Redwood, says, "I have a student this year who is so over the top helpful with his peers that I think I'll remember him for always. He's just over the top, anytime a classmate needs anything, assistance or resources, he's the first to help out."
Each are examples of small acts of kindness that led to students being remembered because of their actions, yet there are also students that are remembered for less than desirable reasons.
As well as Jon Woodbury talking about the time he had a rubik's cube, which he had previously thought was broken, a student of his offered to take it home and fix it as best he could, then later on the student brought back the rubik's cube all fixed up.
Mr. Miller also said that he remembers these two girls that wanted to get into a Mt. Whitney game but didn't want to pay for a ticket, so the girls decided to jump the fence, one of the girls was wearing a denim skirt and got caught on the fence after her friend helped her up, in essence the girl ended up dangling up on the fence and flashing the whole student section her undergarments because it rode all the way up.
Needless to say, we all need to be more conscious and attentive toward our actions and how they effect others.
The impact those actions make may be much more significant than you know, in either way, negative impact or a positive impact.
Mr. Woodbury said, "Another way for me to remember students is if they're artists. I have a wall behind me, I call it the Woodbury wall. A lot of students will draw pictures of me in, like, really funny ways...and i'll just put it on the Woodbury wall and i'll remember those students, the artists.
