some Encanto details you might have missed!
i know many colombians have already talked about these details but alskdalsdkal i’m passionate about this movie so i am gonna talk about this too
when Bruno quitly sings “sana que sana colita de rana“ (i assume he sang this to Casita bc it was falling apart :’)
M IÉRCOLES (apparently a ton of people didn’t understand why agustin was saying “wednesday”. basically miercoles is a kid-friendly way to say mierda, aka shit)
the food!! during the proposal scene, the family is eating ajiaco santafereño, we also see things like buñuelos and arepas
during Abuela’s flashback, when she’s meeting Pedro, they reference Dia de las Velitas which is a holiday that takes place during the 7th of december where people light up candles and pray. afterwards Alma and Pedro are eating buñuelos which are a must-have christmas holiday food (but they exist all year long ofc)
the yellow butterflies: now, i know they are supposed to represent Alma and Pedro, especially considering the song Dos Orugitas, but i want to add that yellow butterflies are a very important and relevant theme in Colombia as they are a reference to magical realism and García Márquez. i don’t know if they intentionally picked yellow butterflies because of this reason but i made the connection anyway
the biodiversity was also a huge theme but i could make a whole post on that so i’ll just say that Colombia is the second most biodiverse country per square meter in the world and it was really nice to see this
at the start of the movie, what Mirabel receives is a maceta valluna
the clothes have different inspirations but Mirabel’s dress specifically is based off of the traditional clothing of Velez in Santander, and we see characters using ruanas, ponchos and sombreros vueltiaos
Pedro died in Caño Cristales
the movie seems to take place in Quindio (specifically Valle del Cocora)
side note: Caño Cristales is located in Meta, which isn’t that far away from Quindio but they are still different departments, so basically they just took the inspiration from different places in Colombia to create the space in which the movie takes place but it’s not like they are EXACTLY in Quindio or Meta or whatever other real place because it wouldn’t make sense that way
Abuela’s backstory is truly heartbreaking, especially when you know what it’s about. many people think it was just a random attack on hers and Pedro’s town. but it’s a lot more than that, there’s a lot of historical context going into it and the fact that they showed the forced displacement that is still a huge issue was just....shocking and unexpected, but a good surprise (here is a twitter thread that goes through Colombia’s history quickly to explain some context to you)
finally i wanted to say that Alma’s backstory likely took place around 1902 and the present time is around 1950, but they intentionally left the time ambigious so it’s a bit hard to know exactly in which year the movie takes place
any colombians are invited to add stuff if you want!
