Listened to a Ted Talk by @quirkyrican Gabby Rivera with my students today. I was inspired by Gabby's celebration of tough Bronx Latinas, her acceptance of her own sensitivity, and of the wish-fulfillment she gets to express by writing Marvel's superhero @missamericachavez, and prompted the kids to create relatable superheroes of their own. ### In her talk, Gabby shares about the power of connecting with your ancestors. When she'd first been exposed to the idea, she was nineteen and knew nothing of ancestors, she says. My students are sixteen, seventeen at most, and, I told them, it's never too early to think about who you came from, and to call on them to inspire your writing. ### While it's more common for People of Color to connect with the idea of ancestors, I told to my white students, no one is 'just' white.
