There was definitely a period in the late 90s when comics got Wordy as Fuck before decompression / cinematic storytelling became the trend.
It’s funny because this was a formative arc in the period that @ununnilium likes to call the Diamond Age. Kevin Smith was the first celebrity outside-of-comics writer, which was a big thing in the 00s. That was also part of comics trying to be more “cinematic,” since a lot of them were screenwriters. (It was also one of the first “hit” comics that kept racking up long delays, IIRC.) But Smith was really, really not taking a “cinematic” approach.
