There was definitely a period in the late 90s when comics got Wordy as Fuck before decompression / cinematic storytelling became the trend.

It’s funny because this was a formative arc in the period that @ununnilium likes to call the Diamond Age. Kevin Smith was the first celebrity outside-of-comics writer, which was a big thing in the 00s. That was also part of comics trying to be more “cinematic,” since a lot of them were screenwriters. (It was also one of the first “hit” comics that kept racking up long delays, IIRC.) But Smith was really, really not taking a “cinematic” approach.

A lot of people interpreting “this character isn’t my fav” as a personal attack, too.

Oh yeah. Same with ships. And then the media themselves starts using the fan wars as a marketing strategy, with the Team nonsense.

RIght? Sometimes you’d think it was like sports teams where you pick a side and mindlessly yell.

Definitely. And this seems to leave little room for “I thought this movie was fun, but I acknowledge that it has flaws,” or “I enjoyed these aspects, but not this,” or “I’m not really interested in this movie, but if others like it, that’s awesome,” or the basic “this movie is/is not to my taste.”

I enjoy discussing media, both the flaws and the positives, but I’m very burned out on the “I like it/don’t like it, so therefore it is morally Pure/Impure.”

I did! It was great to see her. Overall I’m been reasonably happy with how that friendship has been carried through a few different books (I wish one of them had been Nat’s solo but I can forgive that I suppose). But I worry because I don’t feel like Marvel has the best track record for keeping that up
