You know what, I love that Rosemary & Thyme is this 00's British mystery drama that feels like a 90's British mystery drama yet somehow has a soundtrack that sounds like ambient music from a 2010's video game that takes place in medieval times. Also Miss Trunchbull is a nice gardener lady who solves murders
This show is just so fucking camp. I love the first episode; really establishes where the two of them are coming from their differences and their similarities. I think that they are quite close and touchy with each other from the start. It makes me wonder what kind of female friendships they had before this. Particularly Laura who seems to know Sam better than Vicki despite the fact both couples are meant to be friends with one another.
Rosemary is the only senior lecturer in applied horticulture, she has a PhD, why is no calling her Doctor! Especially considering that they meet her in her professional industry all the time. Like I'd get it if they started a cooking business or a garage but she remains in her field and thus her title should be respected; I can't believe they don't use that qualification as some kind of unique selling point - hire Rosemary and Thyme for your most mysterious of horticulture problems, we've a doctor on board.
The fucking line that is Go on Mummy, get her Mummy actually sends me, because what kind of grown woman shouts that! (sorry not sorry, I find it strange when adults say Mummy or Daddy that's for children)
Anyway, a cracking opening to the show; I love it so dearly. Onto the next!
Was this meant to be a page for my poetry and writing? Yes.
Will it now just be every older woman I fancy? Also yes.
Ooooooh another Rosemary and Thyme fan!! That makes me obscenely happy.
Question:
Who do you like more, Laura or Rosemary?
And also, are there any fanfics that haven’t been published but you think the fandom really needs?
Hi! 🌷My head is going to explode with excitement over having people on here to talk to about this show omg 😂 Excellent questions. Allow me to put my glasses on and give a full presentation:
1. Rosemary Boxer is absolutely my favorite.
I get a dopamine rush just saying her full name, why am I like this
I love her sharp wit and practical approach to everything. Her brain is in academic mode 24/7, and I find amusement in watching her balance that with Laura's more intuitive nature. I'm not gonna talk about the way Rosemary's green eyes sparkle in the sun or my knees might give out. She's all method and logic, so when she has her moments of reacting spontaneously to something (Ex: chasing a murderer on a motor scooter, and yelling out the door after someone who shot at her), it's hilarious.
I'll admit— I relate to Rosemary, which tips the favoritism scale a little. Whether it's something she has said, a quirk she has, or something she's worn, there are constantly moments where I think "Hey, I totally do that!"
Additionally, I love Laura though. Her warmth brings a grounded presence in a much needed way. She's not afraid to speak her mind, and she makes me laugh.
2. I haven't been able to keep up with all the fanfics, so I don't know if the things I'm thinking of have been written. But if not, I think I would love to see drabbles about things that seem mundane on the surface.
➡️ Ex: Rosemary and Laura trying to play a casual board game and getting minorly competitive.
The two of them attempting to bake something together and it's chaos because Rosemary needs to follow the recipe exactly and Laura probably doesn't measure anything because she can just "feel" the right amount.
One of them spending a lot of time with a new friend and unintentionally making the other jealous, because what would a subtly envious Rosemary or Laura look like realistically?
Someone assuming they are a couple and just blatantly deciding to go with it to troll because they're tired of explaining 😂 (I go either way with shipping them, I can see scenarios for both).
Oh! And someone framing one of them for a crime so well, even the other begins to have a tiny moment of doubt.
I love completely random topics for fanfiction and could go on for hours. (On another note, I think a Murder She Wrote x R&T crossover would be amazing)
What is that conversation Laura has with Helena about love in 'Orpheus in the Undergrowth' all about?
Laura: "There's one thing I've learned about love...that I know nothing whatever about it. Comes in all shapes and sizes, lands on you like a snowflake and melts away to nothing. Drops on you from great height and sticks like glue. You never know when it's gonna come or what sort you're gonna get."
I know it is partly about Nick, and that's what they go on to talk about, but it also sounds like it's partly from a place of surprise, and about something recent. It would totally make sense if she was talking about Rosemary - basically saying (without actually saying it) that it just sort of happened to her without her ever seeing it coming. She also sounds wistful though, like it's something she's carrying around with her but hasn't been able to talk about before now, and even then it's in vague terms.
She's in love with Rosemary, but she didn't see it coming, felt like it dropped on her from nowhere, possibly having never had feelings for another woman before (the bit about not knowing what sort you're going to get). And then probably she's held it in hoping it would go away, but has realised that it has "stuck like glue" and it isn't going anywhere anytime soon. It feels especially poignant when she also talks about passing fancies in the same breath (the bit about it landing on you like a snowflake and melting away to nothing), because it suggests there have been others (as we do see in other episodes - bits of flirtation, whether for information or for real), but Rosemary is the only who has stuck.
Also in some ways it kind of sounds like she's talking about finding happiness again when you least expect it, even if it's currently messy and full of unspoken things and difficult to navigate.
And she is relatively scathing about the love she and Nick had (it being like pigeon shit, coming from a height and being hard to shift), and when Helena says "I just hope I've got the best sort." Her very ambiguous answer is "me too." Yes, so we all know she's really talking about Helena's love, but she really could be talking about her own, too.
