Laurel & Jason - Ultimate Guide To Whomst They Are
Laurel and Jason are two characters from The Titan's Curse, referenced by Thalia when CHB is playing Capture The Flag versus the Hunters of Artemis.
After this point, they are never mentioned again. So, who are Laurel and Jason, and what do we know about them?
1.) Laurel TTC =/= Laurel Victor
A common misconception is that Laurel from TTC is the same as Laurel Victor, a camper and daughter of Nike who appears in Trials of Apollo. We know this to not be the case as Laurel Victor and her twin sister Holly are shown to be new campers in Camp Half-Blood Confidential. The Victor twins joining Camp Half-Blood is actually a background plot in this book, as we get repeated references throughout the book of a pair of new campers arriving, finally culminating in the first appearance of the twins and them moving in to the newly constructed Nike cabin. So we know the Victor twins joined Camp Half-Blood absolutely no sooner than post-The Last Olympian. So Laurel Victor absolutely cannot be our Laurel from The Titan's Curse.
2.) Jason TTC =/= Jason Grace, Jason TTC =?= Jake Mason...?
Obviously, Jason from TTC is not the same as Jason Grace. Though given the ties to Thalia, it could be this line is what sparked the idea of Thalia having a brother named Jason which would eventually culminate into Jason Grace in Heroes of Olympus. We have no confirmation of this, but it is possible. Rick has been known to rarely reuse character names.
Now, what about Jason TTC being Jake Mason? Related to Rick reusing names, he also often gets details mixed up. It is possible that, due to the similarity in names and what a minor reference Jason TTC is, that Rick recycled his character into the character we now know as Jake Mason. This would make sense with Jake Mason being cabin counselor, as him being present in TTC would easily make him old enough to qualify. This also brings us to our next point:
3.) Do we know their godly parents?
Surprisingly, yes! More or less. This may be odd given we only have literally one singular line about both characters, but given the information from The Titan's Curse we can actually accurately determine what cabins these two are in!
In The Titan's Curse there are only about 13 campers at Camp Half-Blood for that winter, including Percy, Thalia, and Nico. This is not including Clarisse, who is mentioned to be on a quest at the time with some of her siblings, which will eventually result in them returning having rescued Chris Rodriguez as well. Thankfully, TTC also gives us a very convenient head count of who is present at several times throughout the early part of the book. From this we know that several cabins are entirely absent - the Demeter cabin, the Athena cabin (implying the only year-round Athena kid is Annabeth, usually, though she had been attending boarding school with Thalia that year and at the time is kidnapped by the Titan Army), the Apollo cabin (TSATS erroneously retcons this to say Michael Yew and Will Solace were present in TTC, but this cannot be the case. For one, TSATS also says Nico was at CHB for two weeks when he joined, which is impossible given the entirety of TTC takes place within only one week - a detail that is very important to the plot. And TSATS says that Will Solace joined CHB at age eight, which would actually make him a senior camper to Percy. Given Michael Yew is confirmed to be new to CHB by Clarisse in The Ultimate Guide - and generally implied to have joined around Sea of Monsters - this would mean Will Solace should have become cabin counselor instead of Michael after Lee died, which did not happen. His age at the time is irrelevant, since we know Annabeth was cabin counselor by 13 despite being one of if not the youngest in her own cabin, just because she had been there the longest. So we can safely disregard all of that), and the Dionysus Cabin.
The cabins that are present in TTC are: Cabins 1, 3, 5, 8, 9, 10, and 11, or Zeus, Poseidon, Ares, Artemis, Hephaestus, Aphrodite, and Hermes.
So for the Capture The Flag scene and surrounding scenes at CHB, we're told that there are approximately 13 Hunters of Artemis (including Bianca) and an equal number of campers. Of the named campers, we know there is: Thalia, Percy, Beckendorf, Silena, the Stoll Brothers, and Nico. For the unnamed campers, we also know that there are three sons of Ares, and some of Beckendorf and Silena's siblings. This gives us our potential cabins for Laurel and Jason.
So, Laurel and Jason are in one of three cabins: Ares, Hephaestus, or Aphrodite. Technically we do not know the genders of Laurel or Jason, but given Rick's general writing tendencies back in 2008 we can pretty safely guess that Laurel is a gal and Jason is a guy. We also know from Sea of Monsters that at this point the majority if not all of the Hephaestus cabin is guys, and again generally based on Rick's writing at the time that the majority if not entirety of Aphrodite cabin is girls. So we can pretty safely guess that Laurel is a daughter of Aphrodite. This also makes sense as Thalia is asking Silena specifically to bring Laurel and Jason with her.
Moving on to Jason, based on the same logic we can presume he is either a son of Hephaestus or Ares. This is where we have to dig a bit more. First, most demigods have referential or pun names that tie into their divine heritage. Jason is obviously a reference to the Greek hero, Jason, like how Laurel is a reference to laurel crowns. This implies Jason is more likely to be a son of Ares. But let's look at a few more points: We know in Heroes of Olympus that there are allegedly about a dozen children of Hephaestus and about half get named. Jason is not anywhere among this list. If Jason did become Jake Mason then that could be a potential explanation. Meanwhile, we know several Ares kids died in the Battle for Manhattan, and we generally do not see much of the Ares cabin in general (for named campers there, we have Clarisse, Sherman, Ellis, and Mark). Since Jason doesn't appear ever again, him potentially having died in TLO would make sense. Meanwhile, we don't ever get a full head-count of the Aphrodite cabin, so Laurel may still be in there somewhere. We also know in TTC that the Ares cabin was the only present cabin not represented at the counselor meeting to discuss the prophecy, due to Clarisse being on her quest and the remaining Ares kids being injured from Capture the Flag. If Jason was among the Ares kids, this could explain why he is never mentioned again. Ergo, presuming that Jason is not Jake Mason, we can pretty safely presume that Jason is a son of Ares.
So yeah. Jason, son of Ares, and Laurel, daughter of Aphrodite. Two greek demigods who are allegedly good runners, who are only ever mentioned once in the entire series and then never again. Now you know too!
