he had taken the day off to surprise laurel with a picture perfect farmhouse decorated for christmas. most of the lights were up already as dust was approaching and the decorator he had hired to do the inside had packed up about an hour previous to head for a different appointment. everything was perfect, right down to the stockings hanging on the fireplace, garlands wrapped around the porch railing, wreaths with big red velvet bows along the street facing windows, and an eight foot tree sitting inside. thank god for the vaulted ceilings. contrary to popular belief, dexter mitchell was not always the grinch. now, he was on the roof finishing things up; staple gun in one hand and a strand of lights in the other.
her car pulled up along the curb and he pulled the trigger on the staple gun to attach the last of the lights, finishing up his project. carefully, dex stood on the roof, work boots sliding a little before getting his bearings. “hey there, beautiful!” dexter called from the top of the house. “surprise!”
