hey Rylie!! just thought i'd stop by and tell you a bit about the unit im on in english since i think you'd like it! its all about morals and "what makes a good person", we've been reading lots of short stories and writing about why we think the characters make certain decisions and what we think persuades them. its super interesting, we've even talked a bit about the psychology of decision making! (1/2)
we talked about what we think the difference is between ethics & morals, and whether our decisions are affected more by law, religion, or our moral compass, which was such a cool thing to talk about! i'm really glad this is our first unit because even though i took philosophy last year, we only touched on ethics for a small amount of time. anyways i'd love to hear what you think about this topic!! hope you are doing well! 💚 (2/2)
Oh my gosh Laurie, I’m so happy and grateful that you shared this with me because it really does sound like a super fascinating topic! I’d honestly love to take this class, omg. When I was in school, we never had any philosophy classes and it was often just a brief mention in history classes, but I do have a couple of philosophy courses on my list of online courses that I want to take so I’m excited. That’s really really interesting!! I think there really is a lot to say when it comes to determining what qualities makes someone a good person and can someone actually be a good person if they’re sentient and functioning in a world that’s not always good? I can already bet that this unit has encouraged you guys to do a lot of discussions and maybe even debate. This really does seem like a wonderful and intriguing topic to learn about and it’s so interesting how all those factors like law, religion, our upbringing, our cultures perhaps, or just the level of morality we have are really all parts of our personality, beliefs, and tendencies so I’m curious if, when you guys discussed it, was there a factor that came up more often than the others? I’m so curious about that!! Oh my gosh, honestly, this makes me so excited to start my philosophy courses, but I also feel like it might give me a bit of a headache too in the beginning because there will be lots of existential contemplation! I’m sure I’ll get the hang of it though. Thank you so so much for sharing this with me and please continue to do so because I love hearing about what people are learning about in school especially if it’s something I’m really fascinated with! Also, it certainly doesn’t hurt to learn new things. I’m so grateful that you came to ask for my opinions aaah (cue my internal screaming of softness right here) and I hope you’re doing well too, sweet angel!! 🤍✨
