"Low priority?" Logan asked, confused. "How is a warlord low priority?"
Between Logan and the Mon Calamari he was addressing was a holo projector displaying a section of the galaxy. A section that had been taken by one of the many old Imperial Moffs in a desperate attempt at holding onto the power they had gained when the Empire was still in control. They had become warlords, taking their entire command and turtling up in easily controlled systems.
"It's all relative, you should know that," the Mon Cal replied.
"I know..." Logan sighed and leaned forward on the projector and looked at the planets and suns on display.
"It's why you're getting a MC80 cruiser at all. You should be grateful."
He recognised that tone. "Yes, Admiral, you're right, I apologise."
Logan was not the only one hunting a warlord. This was not even close to the worst. The area of space he was looking at was small. Especially compared to other warlords. A lot of the fleet's resources were, in fact, currently being used in the hunt for another warlord, Zsinj.
Admiral Ackbar nodded in acceptance, likely because he was feeling much the same frustrations as Logan was. "Bolt Squadron will be the starfighter unit assigned to this mission. You'll be working with a ground unit, running cover for their operations. They are heavily entrenched in this system, so both your teams will have to work together."
Logan barely suppressed a wince. Ground troops and pilots didn't always get along very well. "Who will be in command, sir?"
The Mon Cal smiled. "Someone I think you'll get along with well,” he pressed a button on the projector. “You can come in, General."
The doors to the briefing room opened and a familiar face walked in.
"Clovis?" Logan asked, taken aback.
"General Clovis," he said with a smirk.
"Ah, right. I mean, yes, sir," Logan scrambled to salute, but Clovis just laughed.
"At ease, Holden, at ease. I'm just messing with you," Clovis waved Logan down as he stepped up beside him. "I'm glad to be working with you, especially considering one of the planets under Azazel's rule."
The General crossed his arms and stared at the hologram. Logan followed his gaze and shook his head. One of the planets right near the middle of Azazel's territory was the very planet Logan had crash landed on years ago. The same planet Clovis used to command Imperial forces. The planet where the pair had met and Clovis had defected.
"I've been waiting for this day," Clovis said, before finally pulling his gaze away from the planet. "I'm looking forward to this."
"As are we," the Admiral interjected. "Azazel took his time taking full command of the system, but we never had a good opportunity to take him on."
“Until now?” Logan asked.
Ackbar nodded. “Until now. I’ve one more person to introduce to you.”
The Admiral hit a button on the holoprojector and the door slid open again. Through the door stepped a human woman in a simple, but still elegant purple dress.
"This is Faye Casella. She was working under the senator for one of the core planets before the Emperor dissolved the council. Since then they have tried to keep the peace as their system went through the turmoil of the Empire taking full control, and now with the warlord Azazel taking over."
Faye came to stand next to the Admiral and bowed her head at Logan and Clovis. "You two will be helping me take back our system?"
Both men nodded.
"General Clovis Chevalier."
"Captain Logan Holden."
"Faye will be accompanying you both as a way to connect to the populace of each planet you rescue. Not all of them are convinced that the New Republic will be able to help, or even that they are a better option."
"Azazel is evil, and crafty," Faye practically spat. "He's convinced many planets his rule is just, despite what should be obvious. We've been losing ground for years. If I hadn't escaped the system..." She sighed and shook her head.”Please help us..."
Logan and Clovis shared a look. "Don't worry ma'am," the General assured her. "We won't let him continue this any longer than we can manage."
"Then you two have your assignments," the Admiral said with a nod. "Pass the orders along and get to work. Good luck, and may the Force be with you."
The trio filed out, with Faye quickly excusing herself and leaving on her own. As soon as she was out of sight, Clovis stopped Logan.
“Hey… Uh…” The man hesitated.
Logan gave him a confused look. “What is it?”
“I just…” Clovis breathed out his nose and obviously looked like he was trying to word something delicately. “I wanted to say I’m sorry. I heard about, ah, your wingman’s death at Endor… Brendan, right?”
Logan felt a familiar pit in his stomach reform. “Yeah. Yeah… Thanks…”
The General nodded. “Yeah. If it weren’t for you two and that smuggler… I owe you a lot. I’m very sorry to hear he’s gone. He was a good man.”
Logan nodded and swallowed, finding himself unable to speak. Clovis seemed to pick up on that, patted Logan on the back and nodded for them to continue down the corridor.
Mercer sprawled himself out on the couch, his large body taking up most of it. His purple eyes were staring down at his crimson claws, Faye wouldn’t be to happy if he flexed them and accidently tore up her furniture. He let out an annoyed huff and a massive yawn. He liked it here though, Faye had been kind to him, feeding him, cuddling the ever loving hell out of the fluffy fox like a teddy bear. He offered her protection and comfort. Always staying by her side at night, keeping an open eye out for trouble. Keeping a very close eye on her when she went into public.
He smiled to himself in self satisfaction of his work. He felt like he was doing a good job, not counting that other human and his shaggy dog mutt he met earlier. He flicked his ears in annoyance. Couldn’t forget the fact that he shared a place with a Ninetales who had the temper of a Tauros. He let out a grumble to himself before his ears picked up the sound of soft footsteps.
“This better be good.”
