Lavender Oil
If you’re going to start using essential oils, lavender is definitely the right place to start. Lavender is known for bringing balance to the body - whenever something is out of whack, whether it be physical or emotional, lavender oil can restore that balance. It’s the universal go-to!
As one of the oldest essential oils, lavender has an immensely long history (that I won’t delve into now). Just know that lavender has been used as a medicinal herb and essential oil for two thousand years, and it is the most well-known essential oil still in use today.
Fun Fact about Lavender Oil
Bugs HATE it. They hate the smell! Lavender is one of the best oils to repel insects, flies, gnats, spiders, silverfish, and creepy-crawlies of all types.
If you’re worried about sharing your bed with spiders or bed bugs (as I know I am): spray some diluted lavender oil on your pillows and sheets OR add a few drops to a fabric softener sheet when you dry your bed linens!
Lavender is Good for More Than Aromatherapy
Remedy for Stress or Anxiety, Bug Bites, Insomnia and More! Lavender Essential Oil Uses
If you have not been following the tips lately, I have been sharing with you some of the amazing tips that have worked wonders for me and my family using essential oils and other natural remedies. Today I am going to talk about Lavender Essential Oil. It is one of my favorite oils of all time. It has so many uses, it is so gentle and smells soooo good! I remember the first time I really felt the effects of Lavender. I was in a yoga class, and at the end, the teacher placed a warm cloth over our face with Lavender on it. I remember feeling instantly less stressed. I was very overwhelmed at the time, and all the things racing though my head as I tried to focus on my yoga instantly disappeared in that moment. I had never experienced anything like it. I am going to share with you some of my favorite uses and tailor some of them for us creatives and photographers!
There are 3 ways to use a high quality Lavender: aromatically, topically and internally. The uses for it however are far more extensive. I will start with a few of my favorites, the ones that I have personal experience with. These uses apply only to the brand I know and use doTERRA. If you are unsure about the quality of the oil please do not put it on or in your body!
1. Stress & Anxiety.
Do you ever get anxious before a shoot? I remember getting nervous before every shoot. Part of that is good it means we care a lot. But if we could be a little more calm we would surely product our best results! I have always had trouble with anxiety. It is just in my nature. Lavender has been amazing for me. Before a shoot, put a couple drops in your hands and rub them together. Then cup your hands over your nose and mouth, close your eyes and breathe deeply. You can also place a drop behind your ears like perfume. It helps keep you calm and smelling great too!
2. Sleeplessness
Do you even have trouble sleeping before a big wedding or portrait shoot? Do you get so caught up editing that you have trouble getting to bed? My husband has chronic Lymes Disease. Along with this comes insomnia sometimes. If he is having trouble sleeping, I simply rub Lavender on his feet or diffuse it in the room and he is usually out in less than 15 minutes. I like to time it so I can brag to him about how well it worked in the morning Lavender is also gentle enough for children, so if your children have trouble sleeping (don’t they all at some point?) you can do the same thing, and rub on their feet and behind their ears. Just a drop or two goes a long way so be sparing!
3. Bug Bites & Stings
We live in middle TN and the bugs really like this warm moist climate! So this summer we had a lot of bug bites around my house. Lavender applied to an itchy bug bite will relieve the itching almost instantly! You do need to reapply after awhile but the relief is very fast. You can also use it for stings. Fiona got stung by a wasp this summer. I put Lavender and peppermint on it and she was mostly fine in just a few minutes. She at least was not screaming anymore and went back to playing! Shooting out in fields and woods sometimes us or our clients can get bit by all kinds of bugs! Keep some Lavender in your camera bag!
So keep Lavender in your first aid kit and by your bed. It has many many more uses including allergy relief that I will talk about in posts to come.
In the mean time, GET YOURSELF SOME doTERRA LAVENDER HERE.
