what is wake up dead man?
sincerely a guy who is very out of touch with recent media
(Tried to stay as light on spoilers as I possibly could but if that worries you then the film is on netflix and it's a murder mystery and a very, very good one at that.)
It's the latest film in a series of murder mysteries made by Rian Johnson starting with Knives Out. There's been three, Knives Out, Glass Onion, and the newest Wake Up Dead Man. Every movie has a different cast and setting aside from ofc Detective Benoit Blanc and involves themes of misogyny, injustice women face when being used/abused, obscene wealth, racism, and other societal injustices in general. And the entire time Daniel Craig, a Very British Man, is doing his best Foghorn Leghorn impression. Glass Onion features a character that's basically just Elon Musk, and the current one has a background character who is explicitly dragging J.K. Rowling.
Wake Up Dead Man was really good and probably my fave so far just bcs I find Catholicism fascinating and love stories that tackle faith and morality and the flaws and benefits of both.
I will say, however, as a warning the newest one, if you have a lot of religious trauma especially around this kind of faith I would avoid this one. The movie isn't anti or even really pro religion it just shows the flaws and the benefits and makes it clear that the meaning people find in it isn't foolish or unintelligent. But they also do not pull punches when showing you EXACTLY how people can use these beliefs to hurt one another and be cruel and vindictive, it does not shy away from the issues, nor does it dismiss the positives.
(This one also hard confirms that Blanc is gay, the last movie more or less confirmed it but some dense idiots took it as him having a butler or living with a friend, the new one makes it clear he's gay and he does talk about how that effects him and his perspective on a case like this.)
Anyway all three are on Netflix I think? Idk about Knives Out itself but that one did get a theatrical release and so you can probably find a DVD of it somewhere fairly cheap or just rent it on youtube or sail the high seas, as it were. Regardless of how you go about it you should absolutely watch them, literally three of the best movies I've ever seen in my life, and a treat if you love murder mysteries, and they even dodge the issue with some mysteries where they aren't really re-watchable; these movies are PACKED with background details and foreshadowing and it just makes it more fun to go back through and pay attention now that you know what happens. It's amazing. I've seen Knives Out like 5 times and it's NEVER not phenomenal.
