he hasn't slept in three days.

if anyone asked, he'd justify it with a solid glance in the direction of his hotel closet wall, a shitty map stuck with over twenty-five red tipped pins, country wide. child sex ring, tracked the big guns all the way down to bumfuck nowhere in the middle of rural malaysia.

(but of course no one asks, 'cause no one cares enough to. here, he's a nobody, just a faceless american with a forgettable name and a forgettable attitude problem. everything's fake, everything's tossable -- name, age, fake id, gun license, clothes, hotel room key card. he's not sure if he likes it, or if he hates it, or if he drives him fucking insane, but he figures he'll stay until he figures it out.)

(everything's the same, no matter where you go -- gotham, paris, malaysia -- they've all got scumbags, they've all got shitty back alleys for you to beat them up in. they've all got bars, and they've all got people who don't give a crap about what really matters, even when it's sitting pretty right in front of their faces. you can't run from your past, you can't run from who you are, and you certainly can't run from the shit, shit, shit of the world, no matter how hard you try.)

he hasn't slept in three days and he's running on fumes, which is probably why he misses her first -- firstsecond step. he definitely makes sure he doesn't miss her third, though, and as luck has it, sleep or not, he's still faster than she is. he gets a good grip on her wrist first thing when she throws it out for a punch, thumps it against the cement behind him before she tosses up her boot and scrapes the side of his face.

with an impressive twirl and a lightning quick second she's got his arm twisted behind his back, and his helmet pressed right up against the cement. her lips are at his ear, and he can feel the imaginary tips of her swords right where they should-- would be if she really wanted to cause any damage. 

"what-- you leave your manners back with the titans, ravager? usually i make people buy me dinner before they ride my ass this hard."
