Caitlyn moved to the edge, Steb taking position behind the rigging plate, hands expertly managing the belay rope running through his friction device. Vi stood ready near the main line anchor, her job simply to ensure the rope fed smoothly, no snags, no twists.

"Ready for entry," Caitlyn stated, her voice calm. She clipped the bright orange main line into her harness descender, the white belay line into a separate locking carabiner.

“On belay?” she called, the formal check ringing out.

“Belay on!” Steb confirmed, his full attention on the rope in his hands, ready to lock it instantly if needed.

Caitlyn took a breath, then swung her legs over the edge, planting her boots against the near-vertical rock face just inside the opening. For a moment, she was silhouetted against the daylight behind her, then she pushed off, letting the rope slide smoothly through her descender, and disappeared into the shaft.

Vi (wildland firefighter) and Caitlyn (search and rescue) hook up sometimes. Or something.
