Jonathan D. KRAMER "The Canons of Blackhearth" /
Lawrence MOSS "Toot sweet"
(split LP. Opus One. 1977) [US]
It’s New Music Tuesday!
Today’s score is Lawrence Moss’s Windows for flute (doubling on piccolo), bass clarinet (doubling on E-flat clarinet), and double bass. There is no record of Iowa’s Center for New Music performing this work on a concert, and it’s also one of the few scores in their collection that was received by the library with no performer or conductor markings.
Moss’s score contains seven cut-outs (the titular “windows”). Whatever appears on the page below is absorbed into the score on the page above. It’s a clever concept that creates a “back to the future” effect for various motives in the work. There’s even a window in the shape of a “t”.
Moss provides some explicit instructions for performers; some at the outset, and some within the score itself (e.g., “all grace notes ON the beat”).
