“No one knows how hard it is. You can never tell who your enemies are, or who to trust. Maybe that’s why I love animals so much. You look in their eyes...and you know exactly what’s in their hearts.”

The Earth Needs Its Superheroes
I am a big fan of marine conservation. When I was a kid, I wanted to be a marine biologist and I wanted to save all of the sharks. Every single one of them. Conserving the ocean and the living things within it has always been a major issue for me and, while looking for volunteer opportunities this year, I started thinking about it a lot more.
Why am I writing about this? It seems like everywhere we look these days someone is talking about “saving the Earth” or “going green”. It’s a little irritating, It’s a little too much. So why? Because an issue generates a lot of conversation if it is an issue that matters to the majority of people, and conservation is this kind of issue.
Things are happening in our world. Deforestation, illegal wildlife trade, climate change, overfishing, and so many more issues are happening right in front of our eyes. Yet many of us refuse to pay attention. Many of us stare at our screens and we don’t take action. We hope that someone else will, and we think somehow these issues will stay contained on the other side of the world. Yet the reality is that nature is everywhere, and everywhere these issues are occurring.
I think everyone should be concerned with protecting the Earth, even if it may not seem immediately important. The world has taken up the issue of animal rights and conservation because people understand that such things have consequences. Conservation has, and always will be, an issue while we live. Human beings have made such an impact on nature that we cannot ignore what we have done. We disregard animals because they do not look like us, just how our ancestors disregarded members of other ethnicities simply because they didn’t believe them to have the same value. This is wrong, and we have learned that. Yet we continue to treat each other the same way. We continue to do the same, if not worse, to our animal friends and the planet we live on. Animal rights, animal conservation, nature conservation… these are all things that require our attention yet many of us refuse to even blink an eye in their direction.
Earth needs its superheroes. Not one hero, but many. Because without all of us working together to protect the planet we live on then we don’t stand a chance if we try to change things.
