When I was in elementary, it was always spelled wrong. I remember 5th grade new being pretty peeved about it too. "How is it spelled honey?" "Its spelled how it s o u n d a. Lay-la. Its not hard!" I got detention but the substitute teacher kept calling me Lyla or some other variation all week and I explained it to her over and over. Pretty funny way to get detention (or i should just say indoor recess lol)

It’s always baffled me that people have so much trouble spelling it, because it literally IS spelled exactly like it sounds! …. but that was why the song thing was my eventual solution, since most people in the 90s/early 2000s were at least passingly familiar with it, so you could see a little “click” when I’d mention the song and they got it right from then onward. I think giving people a little bit of familiarity to latch onto is helpful with a name like that; they literally hear it wrong because they don’t really have a place to put it in their head, so to speak. A few other people I know with unusual first names also do something like that too - “rhymes with X” or whatever, to give new people something to hook the name onto and then they can remember it more easily. 

(And yes, I am WELL aware that this is a hard name on very easy mode - it’s easy to spell and doesn’t involve any sounds, letters, or even ethnic connotations that are unfamiliar to Americans. It’s still weird that people get it wrong so much.)

Anyway, it has been really a fascinating process watching the name becoming more familiar while the song becomes less so. It has also been interesting in just the last couple of years having the name become common enough to start showing up in those cheap monogrammed items for kids - charm bracelets, key chains, bike license plates, the things where you have racks of them at the dollar store. I used to scan them in vain for my name as a kid. XD I actually bought a cheap little ornament with my name on it a couple of years ago, even though I now could easily get anything I wanted monogrammed online, on behalf of my inner 10-year-old who would have LOVED something like that.

Idk to be fair I moved to SE AK only a few years ago. I still haven't met too many Layla's in my life. Do you get middle aged white men/women going "oh like the song by eric clapton!?" Whenever you introduce yourself and before you can even really answer they burst out into "LAAAAAYLLAAAAAA YOU GOT ME ON MY KNEES LAYLAAAA" or is that not the Layla experience for you? -Not that I need a tag but Layla Anon

It’s kind of the opposite for me, actually! For so many years it was such an unusual name that people would often mishear/misspell it (did she say Leila? Lola? Kayla?) so I just got in the habit of introducing myself as “Layla, like the song” and people would go “aha!” It was an easy way of shorthanding it in a version that most people were familiar with.

Then it started getting to the point where I would introduce myself that way and just get blank looks because no one’s heard of the song anymore, and now I feel old. XD On the other hand, now the name is much more familiar and 9 out of 10 baristas spell it correctly, so there’s that.
