esther’s voice pulls him from his reverie and he is grateful for the distraction. abel looks over to her, seated beside him. they hardly had a chance to catch their breath before they boarded the airship. the vatican always seems to will them back with such impatience.  ❝  you can rest. i’ll wake you when we’ve returned.  ❞    even as a crusnik, he’s tired, so he imagines she must be exhausted. though  —  esther often causes him to reevaluate his understanding of terran limitations. always surprising him, in one way or another. how quickly she grew to take such an invaluable place at his side. he wonders, very briefly, how far and to what depth she would recognize him? even when he fails himself.   ❝  i’ll even lend you my shoulder.  ❞   he smiles, softly but it reaches his eyes. his offer is lighthearted but earnest.
