Johnnie Phelps, a lesbian and a WAC, served in General Dwight D. Eisenhower's staff in Europe after World War II. Eisenhower had heard that lesbians were serving in his WAC battalion. He asked Phelps to make up a list of names. Phelps said yes, she would make him that list. But she reminded him that the battalion was highly decorated (that is, its members had won a lot of medals), had a notably low number of pregnancies and absentees, and had a superb record. "I'll make your list," Phelps told the general, "but you've got to know that when you get the list back, my name's going to be first." Overhearing her, Eisenhower's female secretary added, "Sir, if the General pleases, Sergeant Phelps will have to be second on the list. My name will be first." Eisenhower looked at them, shook his head, and said, "Forget that order."

Ok, so this might be a long post but I wanted to share a bit of a different narrative than what is commonly told in regards to coming to terms with being a lesbian (or any wlw really). 

A commonly related experience from wlw is that they remember forcing crushes on boys in their youth. While this is totally a valid and common narrative, it has always really stressed me out because it was so far from what I experienced. 

Looking back on my childhood, I had a “crush” on like.......basically every boy. I was totally “boy-crazy.” 

In the last couple of months, I have been realizing that I’m a lesbian. I like girls, want to date girls, and never want to be with non-girls. My whole “boy crazy” past really stressed me out because I felt like I couldn’t *really* be gay if I liked boys that much as a kid. (Note: I know that's just ridiculous and that past doesn't matter in determining your here and now self but hear me out.) 

I started thinking about it though and I think that all those crushes were...not crushes. Like, I grew up Mormon ok so I basically had all the pressure to be straight as a pole, so I looked for the approval of boys and I think i kind of tricked my mind into thinking I liked these guys? 

I know that sounds kinda ridiculous, I’m trying to formulate it but I’m not doing too great. But basically I think what was really going on was that I had no idea what a crush was supposed to feel like so I projected this desire to be accepted and liked by boys onto every boy I knew because that's what my subconscious thought a crush was?

This feels especially right because my crushes on girls... Oh man they are so different, so better and happier and more real feeling then ever.

shout to lbpq girls who grew up in strictly Christian household: your love is valid and real and not a sin, and you do not have to listen to anyone who tells you that your love will send you to hell or prevent you from going to heaven. your relationship with god, if you choose to have one, is yours and yours alone and no one else can tell you how to handle that relationship. please don’t believe you are damned, my loves. you are beautiful and valid and blessed.
