Meeting new people : Rosie Feenstra meets Marta Bilbao
Marta Bilbao hates cliques, specifically the ones in fashion. To her surprise, Italian fashion was stiflingly introverted during her fashion communication and marketing studies at IED Istituto Europeo di Design; reinforcing the snotty persona fashion tries to shed. “Central Europe is so focused on itself, established designers, it’s suffocating. And getting any work experience? No, it’s almost impossible”.
Now in London, Marta is determined to find her way in the industry that celebrates diversity and “the wider point of view on style”, making her fashion journalism masters at LCF the ideal move. Studying in London “will give me a much more cosmopolitan view of the industry, with a larger range of designers, photographers and writers. It’ll enable me to springboard into any job...I have a good understanding of the spectrum of fashion from my previous degree, but leaning in London will make it so much more diverse”.
Meeting new people : Haohao Quian meets Siyu
I met Siyu in Hign Holborn by coincidence, she is a Chinese independent jewelry designer based in London, and we had a good and passionate conversation with great passion. She graduated from Birmingham Institute of Art and Design and established her jewelry brand, Lion Studio in London. Lion Studio pieces are produced with crystals, customized agate and plated brass. She draws inspiration from personal experiences and feelings in her daily life; she wants to use her designs to tell story.
We spoke about the situation of London-based Chinese independent designers, Siyu thinks Chinese designers are talented, but don’t not know how to promote themselves to customers and social media. She used her current situation as an example, she said “sometimes the personality of designer can affect the brand trade. The most difficult thing for me is marketing and promotion, because I am not good in socializing. This kind of job should be given to PR and advertising professionals. However I do not have extra money to pay for a PR company. ' As we all know, to be a good independent designer is not easy in London, designers need to get over a lot of difficulties, but I think Siyu can handle the challenges.
