I think starting the pm series from ruina is a worse starting point than limbus, which in turn is a worse starting point than lobotomy corp.
Like, starting in ruina you miss out on so much and it makes the majority of the characters you soend time with (the sephira and angela) hit way less hard. I genuinely think that to enjoy ruina to its fullest you need to play lobcorp first, or at least watch the story and abno logs.
And frankly I dont get people complaining aboit limbus spoiling ruina when it offers 0 context as to what actually happens. And frankly at least for me knowing some bits and pieces for the fallout of ruina had me more invested in ruina's story and trying to figure out wtf happened to lead up to that.
Also, ruina spoils lobcorp, majorly. And not just contextless spoilers either.
But my biggest thing is that the characters of the sephira and Angela are so much worse without the context of lobcorp. Ruina Hod without L Corp is just a fucking cinnamonbun rather than ahowcasing her healing from L Corp and trying to move forward with her life.
Ruina is the payoff for the sephira's stories in lobcorp and without that lobcorp component, the meat, if you will, you're just eating a plate of sauce. Sauce that was meant to go on the meat you threw out.
Also imo Ruina has the least good story out of all 3 games. Spoilers ahead.
Roland's story flops like a wet rag because Angelica is not a character. We know nothing about her as person or why Roland loved her, only that she's his wife so obviously a husband loves his wife. She exists only as roland fuel. Take Xiao's story which works specifically because Lowell is a character. We see why Xiao loved him and what he meant to uer and so much more than just "he's her husband so she loves him". Angela's story is perfect though I love my transfem robot queen.
Aaaand the sephira. I understand what they were going for but for a lot of them (yesod, hod for example) too many edges were shaved off. They pretty much removed Yesod's OCD which is pretty icky and hod... well... ruina hod is ruina hod. But imo that isnt even the biggest issue. That could have all be resolved with more screentime. Show us the Sephira healing and interacting with each other more. Show us them and roland and angela. I know the main story's focus is on Roland and Angela but the Sephira are such huge parts and frankly such huge characters and such memorable characters that it feels so bad seeing what we get of them in ruina.

I genuinely think that if you're not experiencing lobcorp before ruina you are missing out on so much. It doesnt matter if you play the game or read the stories and abnologs on tiph archive or whatever. Lobcorp has genuinely one of the best stories I've seen and also some of the best aspec representations I've sern (Call me delusional all you want but when I played all of the sephira read as some form of aspec to me).

My hottest take
Limbus has better writing than ruina overall. Lobcorp has them both beat by a large margin tho.
Aside from Angela, Yan, Xiao and Phillip, the rest of the characters are kinda just there. The sephira and carmen are nothing without lobcorp. The aiseyah sephs are reduced to exposition, tiphereth has nothing going on, geb and ches are okay ig but 90% of geb's story is roland slander/whoa red mist. Binah got all her edges sanded off and hokma is the one seph that actually has interesting stuff going on. Roland's story falls flat because Angelica is barely a character and we have no reason to care abt her outside of the fact she's his wife. The reverb ensemble is okay but literally everyone is so underdeveloped and ughhhh. Ruina works with lobcorp played before jt but even then its story aside from Angela's and a few others is mid af.
Limbus story is far from perfect but overall it's just consistently better. Going purely limbus vs ruina the sinners are better characters than the sephs (in ruina). Not to mention a lot of their antags actually being super fleshed out and/or super interesting.
And before someone says "ruina is meant to be played after lobcorp" 1: then why is it so intent on explaining the events of lobcorp to you, and 2: Look at how many people start with ruina as their first pm game instead of lobcorp.
