Alex still couldn’t believe this was happening. Even as he pulled into Sander’s Auto, looking for Michael’s truck. He texted him when he got the message I need to talk to you, can I come over?
They hadn’t seen each other since it happened. Alex insisted Michael not be involved in the investigation, not willing to risk his secret coming out. He’d been dealing with all of the paperwork and explanations and decision-making that came with Flint’s death. Flint’s death sacrificing himself to protect Michael.
When he parked, he just sat there in the car, thinking about how he was going to do this. How he was going to ask this of Michael. Having a family with Michael, raising kids together, was something he’d only dared to dream of on his most hopeful nights. Alex had no idea how Michael felt about the idea, they’d never talked about it, they hadn’t done much talking at all, as kids. Even now that they were doing better, it was a topic that just hadn’t come up.
Blowing out a breath, he opened his car door and pushed himself out of the seat, moving stiffly to the door of the airstream, replaying the voicemail in his head. Hello Mr. Manes I’m calling from the department of child services. I know you’ve been through a great deal with your brother’s passing and the investigation. I am very sorry for your loss. When you can, please give me a call back to discuss the custody of your niece and nephew. Your brother left you in charge of decisions related to your care.
Reaching the door, Alex raised a shaking hand to knock and wondered how in the world they were going to do this.
