It’s no secret that vampire attacks were common in my neighborhood but hey, what can you do? Maybe not walk home in the middle of the night, I thought to myself as I passed another corner and turned down an alley. I can’t help the feeling in my stomach telling me someone’s watching me, following me, but I tell myself is just paranoia. Despite what I tell myself my heart still races, I turn to see no one behind me but when I turn back there’s a women in front of me.
“Well hey there pretty thing” she sends me a sly smile and the sight of her fangs sends a chill down my spine. She steps forward and I take step back, my back hitting the rough, wet, brick wall behind me. Fuck. My heart races more and she smirks again.
“I’m not afraid of you”, she chuckles and again steps closer, her face now mere inches from mine.
“Oh? You should be”. I send her a challenging look and attempt to raise my arms to push her away but she beats me to it, and pins my hands to the wall. I squirm and try to release myself from her iron grip, not caring about the harsh sting of her tightening her hold or the sharp bricks cutting into my flesh. Though I can’t see the back of my hands at this point I can still feel the blood trickle down one of them. Her nostrils flare and something flashes in her eyes, something primal. I watch as her jaw tenses and she looks almost in pain, despite her being a dick I want to help,
“Are you alright?” her eyes land on my wrists and she licks her lips before looking back down, training her gaze onto the ground.
“I can smell your blood”, she mumbles through gritted teeth.
“Weren’t you going to attack me anyways, what makes this different?” I dare to ask, the fear still rising in my stomach.
“Actually I wasn’t, there was a feral vampire following you and I try to stop as many attacks as I can”
“Feral?” her jaw tenses yet again and her breathing is labored.
“Ferals are the ones that are causing all the attacks, normal vampires don’t do that, we feed off of willing people only; we’re very, very strict on that”. She looks up to meet my gaze and I can see something human in her eyes, empathy. “If I can smell your blood other vampires around can too and ferals don’t exactly have the best self-control… We should go”. As if on cue I see a dark figure walking our way. “Get behind me”, I make my way to stand behind her, leaning so I can peer around her at this figure. The women growls and stiffens her stance. The other vampire flinches but only for a moment,
“What’s wrong? Don’t want to share?” His voice is high and gruff, almost scratchy. He steps forward carefully, eyes landing on me.
“Back off rat”, the women hisses out, baring her fangs, her gaze never leaving him.
“Ouch, that isn’t very nice now is it?” he again looks at me.
“Back off before I make you”. They stay still, seemingly in some standoff, “Fine”. The woman pushes me further back before walking to the man, his gate more erratic and rushed. They meet in the middle and he’s the first to move, throwing a punch that she blocks. He throws another punch but she ducks, sweeping her foot behind his and knocking him down. As his back hits the ground he hisses, flipping himself upright and charging towards her. I’m too focused on the fight to notice the presence behind me until it’s too late. Someone had grabbed me and clutched me against their chest. I let out a yelp of surprise and catch the women off guard, making her put her focus on me and giving the man she’s fighting the advantage which he eagerly takes; taking her arms in his hands, digging the points of his nails in and drawing blood. She quickly adjusts her focus again and spins, pulling out of his grip and flipping him onto his back yet again, though this time he doesn’t get up immediately, instead he slowly rolls onto his side before wheezing to catch his breath and limping off in the other direction as quickly as possible. At the loss of the other vampire the one holding me seems to lose their courage, letting go of me and running to wherever they came from. The woman is out of breath and in pain.
“Come on that needs cleaned”, she hesitates before following me the rest of the way home. When we reach my apartment I unlock the door and walk straight in, she again hesitates.
“Yeah. Do vampires really have to ask before coming in?”
“No, I was being polite”. I nod before leading her to sit on one of the chairs by the island. I go into the bathroom and rummage around for a bit before I find the first aid kit. I walk back out and set it onto the island, getting out a few things and setting them down as well.
“May I?” I ask gesturing to her arm. She nods silently. I grab the peroxide and dampen a wash cloth, wiping the dirt and dried blood from the area before moving on to the other arm. I put on some anti-bacterial cream and wrap her wounds in gauze. I pour a glass of water and offer it to her to which she chuckles and raises a brow.
“Right, sorry, forgot about the whole ‘only drinks blood’ thing”. She grabs my hand and cleans the wound on the back of it like I did hers.
“There, figured I should pay you back for fixing me up” She looks up at me before standing back up, only to almost topple back onto the chair. I grab her shoulder before looking her over again for any other injuries.
“Yeah, just, used a lot of energy up is all… I just need to sit down and then find something to eat tomorrow”
“Why can’t you find something tonight?”
“The facilities are all closed by now” Despite everything in my gut telling me that it was a bad idea I trusted her and wanted to help.
“You can, ya’ know, use me… If you want that is unless I’m not your type or something”, the last part rushes out as I joke to try to lessen the anxiety bubbling in my chest. I look at the floor and fiddle with my hands but feel her gaze on me. I look back up and her eyes look… hungry to put it best but yet there’s still empathy.
“Are you sure? It’ll hurt”, I nod,
“Yeah, just try not to kill me”. I try to lighten the mood with another joke but her face remains serious as she grabs my arm and pulls me closer, she looks at me like she’s sorry.
“You’re absolutely sure?”
“Yes”. She takes my arm into her hand again and brings it to her lips. I feel her fangs prod lightly and my heart rate picks up again, she can probably hear it. She chuckles against my skin and pulls back slightly,
“A little, haven’t exactly been bitten by a vampire before”. She hums,
“Just try to relax”, she stands and moves so that I’m the one sat in down. She brings her lips to my arm again before biting down. It pinches but isn’t as bad as I thought, it tingles and burns slightly. After a minute or two I start to get a little dizzy and she pulls away, licking her lips and catching me as I slump forward. I’m vaguely aware of her picking me up and carrying me to a room, setting me down on what feels like my bed. I feel her pulls the covers over my body and the bed dipping slightly at the foot but pay little attention to it as I fall asleep. When I wake back up in the morning I don’t see her in the bed so I assume she left, that is until I walk into the kitchen to see her pacing with her brows furrowed. “Well good morning”, she looks up and sends a smile my way,
“Good morning, glad to see you’re alright”. I smile back and pour myself water, sipping at it.
“So, if you don’t mind me asking what’s your name?”
“Hyojin, but my friends call me LE. You?”
“My name’s Y/n. So did you just pace around my kitchen all night or?”
“Pretty much, I wanted to make sure you were okay”
“All good here, so why didn’t you sleep on the couch or something?”
“Vampires don’t really need sleep so it would be pointless”, I nod before making my way over to the fridge. “I take it you don’t want pancakes or eggs?”
“No, but thank you, I should be going actually. I left my number on the fridge if you need anything”, she smiles before walking out, closing the door carefully.
