Here’s a photo from BC, Before Coronavirus. Which I wanted to post today, May Day. A plaque tells the story. It’s a reproduction of the maypole (or shaft) that until 16th century was put up on the corner of nearby St Mary Axe. The shaft was so tall it towered over the church which became known as St Andrew Undershaft. It was stored when not in use in an alley near this spot next to the Leadenhall Building.
