Why does Shiro remind me of Mako from LoK?
It took a few episodes, because at first Keith reminded me of him more, but now Shiro’s he’s reminding him of me too, just a different side of him. Everyone’s pointing at Shiro and saying he’s “the most Mako,” so I might revise this when I’m done with the show
As of Episode 4, Keith reminds me more of aspects of Mako we got to know earlier in LoK, just toned down. His expressions and sometimes his posturing are more reminiscent of Mako’s and his tendency to take things seriously more often than others in his group (looking at Lance), but how Mako does loosen up in more intimate settings. Mako’s a more blunt and can be straight-up curt or rude where Keith only seems to be reserved and and “hate” Lance. There’s something of a mysterious/loner element to his past so far that reminds me of Mako in Book 1.
Then Shiro reminds me of the parts of Mako that came around as we got to know him better, and he matured and grew as a character. He’s the team leader, which Mako had a tendency to be with the core Team Avatar, especially since he was the oldest, the team captain of the Ferrets and grew up thinking about keeping himself and Bolin alive and in as good of health as possible–there was a naturalness in the way Mako would take command of situations, and it’s there with Shiro too. Shiro’s the one who anchors the the rest of the group down and provide points of reason for them when things start going haywire, and there’s a tone and handling to his dialog and blocking at those points that reminds me of him a bit. Mako saying, “Calm down,” firmly kind of pops out at me when I look at Shiro now that he’s done more of that kind of stuff.
Then there’s just how he takes to leadership along with a willingness to put himself on the line for his team. He’s not just a leader in the sense that he’s got more experience and can “boss them around” efficiently, but he feels responsible for them. Mako was always very self-sacrificing from the beginning of Book 1 for whomever he felt responsible for, but that was pretty much only for the people on his Official “I Love You” List™. Which started very, very short. (As in one person short.) However, we see this element of him more and more as LoK moved along and Korra moved him to change with her example. Especially in Book 3 with moments like when he threw his body over Asami to shield her from that bomb in Zaofu because she had no protection of her own, the way he creeps into lowkey desperation when Korra’s kidnapped (when that desperation starts to actually come out it’s less Shiro and more just Mako), staying with Bolin to face Ming Hua and Ghazan so the girls can get away, disliking Korra’s decision to give herself to the Red Lotus etc. And again, Mako’s history made him basically reserve this behavior only for people that got close enough him for it, but by the end of LoK he’s more altruistic to the point he’s willing to die in the Colossus for the good of the city. Either way, what he did for Matt I can see Mako doing for Bolin (and eventually other people he sees himself responsible for).
There’s a specific warmth to Mako we came to learn about, and I see that same warmth–that slightly paternal element–in Shiro. Especially because he does it without hesitation, almost like breathing, and then doesn’t even give the suggestion that he feels like he should get something in return. He just moves on.
Anyway, I still more than half of the season to go, so I think I’ll see more of why people are making this comparison.
So TL;DR - Currently, Keith is the Mako I saw when I wanted to get to know him more, Shiro is the Mako I eventually got to know.
