it looks like the op of the first leaks admitted they were fake? i’ve also seen people talking about how strict the copyright holders for macross are and how it’s going to be very expensive for their characters to have more than a cameo in other franchises, but i just wanted to add a couple things:
i work for a local tv station in asia and we aired up to season 3 of vld. (i wasn’t put in charge of that but i’ve dealt with a couple western tv show franchises.) we almost never do simultaneous broadcasts of western shows here because the more recent the season is, the more expensive it gets. unless it’s a super popular franchise, we’re not really going to pay when we can wait a couple years and have the price go down, you know? sometimes we get deals with the actual studio (promotional stuff, media partners here in asia, what have yous) and if so we air the episodes as is, with no dubbing.
i’m not sure how it works with streaming services like netflix (but there’s so many reasons why netflix from other countries only show up to s2 or whatever, copyright is a complicated thing)
and i’m not sure how it works with simultaneous international release (crunchyroll does that for some anime, but even then they only have to put subtitles, not dub the whole ep)
but for tv at least what we do is buy the rights per season, we get all the episodes, send them over to a studio for dubbing, and wait for the eps to come back to us. the dubbing studio whose services we use aren’t the most reliable (and they accept so many other jobs from other companies) so it can take ages for the dubbed episodes to come back to us. we’ve never really had to deal with dubbing a season before it airs in the country of origin because like i said: super expensive, probably only works if there’s like a branch of dreamworks in that country (and even then, it’s highly unlikely), and it’s much easier to put in subs instead of dubbing if they want other language options.
so idk man, foreign countries might actually shell out the money if it’s like game of thrones or walking dead, but they sure as hell not gonna do that for an animated show aimed at kids. none of us ever had to sign nda’s for dubbing because again, we never see the episodes until after they aired in the country of origin. but i’ve worked with the post production of the amazing race before and lemme tell you, we even had to hide our shit from the people who clean our offices because their nda’s are serious af. i doubt dw is gonna forget to send nda’s out for translators/dubbers pre-release. assuming those leaks are ‘real’, but heck this is a company we’re talking about.
