The end of Ch.3

北京 - Běijīng - Beijing (what a surprise!)

上海 - Shànghǎi - Shanghai

南京 - Nánjīng - Nanjing

旧金山 - Jiùjīnshān - San Francisco

洛杉矶 - Luòshānjī - Los Angeles

加州 - Jiāzhōu - California

Let’s talk about these names a little bit!

北京 literally means Northern Capital. The capital city of China changed many times during it's history. 北京 has been the capital several times, often changing whenever a new dynasty took over the country. Generally speaking, if you were to look at China’s history of rulers, there would typically be one family ruling over the country, passing the throne down through generations. There was always a rival family though, and often more than one. Eventually, one or more families (they would sometimes work together, and marry so as to rise to power together, sometimes then turning on each other, but not always) would revolt, and usurp the throne from the ruling dynasty. As the dynasties changed, the new ruling family would either move into the existing capital, or declare another city the capital.

This is where 南京 gets its name as well. Meaning Southern Capital, 南京 was also very often named the capital city. Fun fact, the Mandarin word for Tokyo, 东京 Dōngjīng, also means Eastern Capital. 

上海 quite literally means “by the sea” or “on the sea”, and Shanghai is a coastal city. I don’t know if there is more to the name of the city than that.

旧金山 translates to Old Gold Mountain, referencing the historic San Francisco gold rush.

洛杉矶 is named phonetically to try and sound like the English, Los Angeles

加州 unfortunately, I don’t know anything about.
