On the news last night, I saw an interview of someone who lives directly in the path of Hurricane Nicole. The reporter asked, “Did the devastation of Hurricane Ian affect your thought process about whether to stay or evacuate for this storm?” The local woman just kind of smiled and said, “Nah, not really. I'm getting used to being observed, because I have being observing myself.

Watching the movements I make in reverse from a mirror. Eye contact with (near) strangers. The subtle change in my body from from day to day. Comparisons and parallels of the people my age and in my life; the strange perceptions that we have of ourselves and of each other. The way my idiosyncratic tendencies fall on people, their reactions, what is uniform and what falls outside the bell curve. How taking smaller steps and shifting my weight on each footfall gives me firm grounding and grace (and a swaggering slither.)

Do you learn to be charming? Or rather, can you? Is it worthwhile to sacrifice honesty for image? Is this too far of a leap to question?
