speaking of the durability of leather, it still blows my mind how long lasting even the cheap stuff can be- I have some bargain leather work gloves I use for gardening. Whenever they get stiff and muddy i literally just wash them with some ancient saddle soap and lightly condition them, and BAM, just as supple as when they were new. They still look like shit but they're fully functional. Same thing with my work boots- I washed them recently and they looked 5 years old instead of 20
