The Smoke Smelled Like My Past || Bubba & Stretch

It still baffled Stretch how quickly the pavement could go from hot enough to fry an egg to freezing cold. It was summer, but the previous day's rain left the air humid, the winds weren't helping. It took Stretch five attempts to light a cigarette. She cursed herself for following her producer's "friendly advice" and wearing a dress to the place is the most recent news, retreating to the van and grabbing her jacket while the driver and cameraman got everything ready.

The police kept bringing body bag after body bag towards the spot where two unsuspecting —now traumatized— hitchhikers found what upon digging a little deeper turned out to be a potter's field of some kind on the side of the road. The wind changed, bringing the smell of the waterlogged bodies to where Stretch was standing, she took another long drag from her cigarette, trying and failing to stop her thoughts from wandering into the nightmare she'd lived a few years ago when she'd met the Sawyer's and almost didn't live to tell the tale.

Stretch snapped out of her thoughts when her cameraman snapped his fingers in front of her face, almost dropping her cigarette.

"We're ready to start," the cameraman, Dwight, nudged her towards where the camera was positioned at an angle where the police cars and the officers dressed in hazmat suits who were waist deep in the grave could be seen.

Nodding, Stretch stood in front of the camera, taking the mic and dropping her cigarette before stepping on it to turn it off. As the camera's light turned on, she smiled.

"Good evening, everyone, right now we're in the crime scene of what people are calling the massacre of the decade by the main route. Earlier today, two hitchhikers found what looked like human bones sticking out of the ground, upon further inspection, the police have found that it is a common grave with at least three unidentified bodies." Stretch tucked her hair behind her ear, softly moving so the camera would show yet another full body bag being dragged by two policemen towards their vehicle. "No suspects have been found yet, but police recommend that anyone planning to drive past our current location stick to the road and abstain from picking up any strangers. As for hitchhikers, they recommend travelling in groups and being careful of who's car you get into," she continued. "This is Stretch Brock wishing you a good night and asking you all to stay safe."

Connie had been out for over an hour, searching for supplies with very little success. Now she was just walking through the forest, enjoying the peace only nature could bring nowadays.

She stopped dead on her tracks when two walkers stepped out of the bushes ahead of her, her alertness melted into confusion when they kept walking like she wasn't there. She'd just loaded a rock in her slingshot and was about to shoot at one of them when she realized: if they walked right past her, there was something attracting them.

A hunch made Connie follow the walkers, keeping a safe distance as to not distract them but also not losing sight of them. Her eyes went wide when after just a few minutes of walking, she spotted the child kicking at a tree, looking upset and completely unaware of the danger he was in.

Connie didn't hesitate. Knife in hand, she rushed forward, stabbing the first walker through the skull and using the momentum of the body falling back to round-house kick the second one's leg, feeling the bone break and watching it fall. She let the body hit the ground, stabbing the second as she did with the first before her attention went back to the child.

She quickly put her knife back in its sheath, showing her hands to the boy, trying her best to show that she wasn't a threat.

Jesus Christ, that was a big man? Was it even a man? Yes, those were human eyes behind that horrid mask-- she had seen something like this before; but, they didn’t scream and carry on like this one did. It was a feeble attempt to run, and she didn’t get far, but she did her best-- and she she felt strong fingers around her throat, she let out a strangled gasp.

Tara was terrified, but she did her best not to show it-- and when those unfamiliar fingers tightened, her eyes bounced around in her skull; left to right, up to down, as she looked for any possible way out of this. “P-please.” She hadn’t meant to stumble upon him, she had just been seeking shelter. “I--” Her arms swung upward to grip his upper arms. “N-not here-- to hurt.” She choked out.”

Starved For Help || Stretch & Bubba

Stretch had no idea how long they'd been walking for, but her legs ached with each step she took. Her crowbar was soaked in blood, but it had dried. She and LG had been forced to leave the radio station after a large group of the undead heard the loud generator and broke in. They barely made it out with enough supplies to last them two days. Stretch had been walking for a week, she hadn't seen LG in three days.

After the undead also found their camp and she lost sight of LG while running through the forest, Stretch hadn't stopped walking. She wandered, not knowing where she was, her hand tightly wrapped around the crowbar as she dragged it along. She was exhausted, hungry and covered in dirt and blood, arms and legs scratched up by . Whatever undead she ran into was dodged and left behind. Stretch knew her limits, she knew her body didn't have the energy to be going around killing them when it wasn't necessary. She had to save her strength.

A dirt road just ahead made Stretch let out a sigh of relief, at least she wouldn't be walking blindly through the forest anymore. She looked both sides, seeing no signs or anything that might indicate where she was. Having to choose blindly if she should head left or right, she chose left, following some marks on the ground that resembled footprints that for once didn't look like they were from someone who was dragging their feet.

It must have been another hour before a wooden fence and gate came into view, Stretch strained her exhausted eyes, looking at the silhouettes standing past the fence and the field. Two men, she realized as she got closer. She started walking as fast as her legs would allow.

"Hey!" she called out to them, stumbling a little in her steps before clinging to the wooden gate to not fall face first on the ground. "Help me, please!"
