The Democratic Lecture - Craig Oldham

On Wednesday I had a guest lecture at the university from Craig Oldham, and it was defiantly an experience.

Craig made us aware at the beginning of the lecture that he swears ALOT. Which he does. It came as a shock at first. He cursed more times in a sentence than I do in a week, not considering he was in front of 20+ students and a tutor. In a way this was his appeal. There was a real sense of 'No Bullshit' to the talk, that he was giving it to us straight, which was exactly what we needed to hear. This approach helped as he didn't tip toe around the problems and struggles young designers will come up against when graduating, he merely told us the blunt truth. Before the lecture took place we were asked to vote on Craig's Lecture Website on subject we wanted him to cover during the talk. This was a really good idea as it allowed Craig to talk about subject we all wanted to to know more about,

The five he covered were:

- Different types of designers (figure out which one you are)

- Music (Manchester based agency)

- Portfolio's

- Placements

- Graphic Design is 'DEAD'

Craig showed us work he had done including Music's parody on Christmas song's. Vulgar and hilarious. The idea really worked.

He also talked about things that infuriate him when it comes to Graphic Design. From portfolio trends to bad spelling and manners. This was funny, and filed to the brim with Craig's favourite swear words, but it actually addressed some of the mistakes students make when creating their portfolio's. these mistakes happen because they are hooked on design trends. One trend that Craig HATED was this one -

Craig explained that when this comes up within a portfolio he is distracted by the background and takes no notice of the work itself. This is a trend, not a great way to display work.

This lecture was a really good insight into the creative industry. Craig really made it special, motivational and exceptionally interesting.
