Lednice Castle
Lednice Castle is located in Lednice in the Czech Republic. The Baroque and Gothic Revival style chateau was built in the 1800’s and served as the summer home for the ruling Princes of Liechtenstein. Lednice Castle was built on the site of a previous Gothic fort from 1222 AD. The castle was replaced and renovated many times throughout its long history. The new castle took 12 years to complete and sits amongst pines forests, gardens, parks, and ponds. The property boasts a Gothic fort, riding hall, stables, formal gardens, and follies. There are residential pavilions throughout the property, which include hunting lodges, chapels, colonnades, the temple of Three Graces, imitation castle ruins built in 1807, and a soaring conservatory. Inside the castle you’ll find carved wood ceilings, an elaborate spiral staircase, and coved ceilings. In the 20th century, the Nazis confiscated the property and the family relocated. After WWII, the family tried to regain their property, but ownership was passed to the new Soviet Czechoslovakia who didn’t support returning large estates to exiled landowners. Lednice Castle is a World Heritage Site and is open to the public.
