Today is 241 years since the Lee Resolution was presented to the Continental Congress. It was a resolution for the independence of the Continental Congress. It declared that:-

“That these United Colonies are, and of right out to be, free and independent States, that they are absolved from all allegiance to the British Crown, and that all political connection between them and the State of Great Britain is, and ought to be, totally dissolved; that measures should be immediately taken for procuring the assistance of foreign powers, and a Confederation be formed to bind the colonies more closely together.”

Due to the amount of uncertainty in some states that vote was delayed until 1 July 1776 and then for another day until 2 June 1776 when 12 colonial delegations voted in favour. Only the New York delegated abstained.

June 7, 1776, Richard Henry Lee of Virginia introduces a resolution to the Second Continental Congress, calling for the independence of the American colonies from Great Britain. Quickly seconded by John Adams of Massachusetts, the motion nonetheless welcomed hesitation from other delegates on whether such a measure would be appropriate, thus postponing the date of vote. Four weeks later, the next step in the birth of a new nation would finally take place.

Resolved, That these United Colonies are, and of right ought to be, free and independent States, that they are absolved from all allegiance to the British Crown, and that all political connection between them and the State of Great Britain is, and ought to be, totally dissolved.

That it is expedient forthwith to take the most effectual measures for forming foreign Alliances.

That a plan of confederation be prepared and transmitted to the respective Colonies for their consideration and approbation.

“Resolved, That these United Colonies are, and of right ought to be, free and independent States, that they are absolved from all allegiance to the British Crown, and that all political connection between them and the State of Great Britain is, and ought to be, totally dissolved.

That it is expedient forthwith to take the most effectual measures for forming foreign Alliances.

That a plan of confederation be prepared and transmitted to the respective Colonies for their consideration and approbation.”

Acting under the instruction of the Virginia Convention, Richard Henry Lee introduced a resolution in the Second Continental Congress proposing independence for the colonies, 240 years ago on June 7, 1776. On July 2, 1776 the Continental Congress (by a vote of 12-0) voted to formally separate themselves from Britain. Here's the resolution which kicked off the debates. It was proposed by Richard Henry Lee on June 7, 1776) and was scrawled on some scrap paper. 

Resolved, That these United Colonies are, and of right ought to be, free and independent States, that they are absolved from all allegiance to the British Crown, and that all political connection between them and the State of Great Britain is, and ought to be, totally dissolved.

This Day in History: June 7

June 7, 1776, Richard Henry Lee presents the "Lee Resolution" to the Continental Congress. The motion was seconded by John Adams and opened the discussion for true independence in favor of reconciliation. Following the Lee Resolution, Congress designated the Committee of Five to draft the Declaration of Independence.
