What are the eyeball leeches

Unfortunately as the name implies they are leeches that will try to sucker onto your eyeballs 😬 Chtonobdella palmyrae is the species we have in particular -- named for our island, as it was discovered here (though it's traveled great distances by hitching a ride in the eyes and mucus membranes of far-flying seabirds).

It's a jawed land (and arboreal) leech found in the tropical and subtropical Pacific, and here we see it mostly in the canopies of trees in our seabird colonies. This is why you just always wear a hat with a brim in the seabird colonies. Especially when it's raining. Anyways at least five of em today were crawling on my assorted coworkers which was bad for our workday experience 👍
