Lee was in a mood.
In a very bad mood.
He had been trying to finish a chemistry assignment for the past half an hour. Half the hour in the same exact point of his homeworks, frustrated while looking at it, with no luck of solving it. The numbers were swirling on the page, the words in the problem no longer made sense, and the results on his calculator were totally different from the ones in his exercise. It was clear that anything related to math wasn’t his strong suit and it didn’t help that everyone in the house was making three times the usual amount of noise. It was as if they had all conspired to bother him during his study time, which didn’t come around very often.
Lee Garcia liked peace.
His own peace, which he didn’t get in many areas of his life, if he was being honest. In fact, most of the time it came from the sunbeam he had as a housemate. A cheerful girl who had come with Jackie no long ago, with much more humor, more charisma, and certainly more energy. Not even he or his brother could always keep up with her, and that was saying a lot. But even so, he liked it. He liked the way she was, how she cheered him up when there was nothing to be happy about, and how she laughed as freely as she did.
Even after going through terrible things before coming to this place, she could still smile in the brightest way possible. And Lee couldn’t just let that go unnoticed. Maybe that’s why it wasn’t a surprise when the door to his room opened and he didn’t scold anyone. Because he knew it was her, the one who walked softly over to where he had his back turned, wrapping both arms around his neck in a gentle hug from behind.
She didn’t need to say anything, nor ask what was going on with him. All she did was hug him from behind with all the softness in the world, hiding in the curve of his neck as if she were transferring all her good energy to him. Maybe it worked like magic, or maybe it was just him being so clouded by her presence that he finally relaxed. He let go of the pencil he had been gripping tightly without realizing, put aside the notes that weren’t helping him at all, and relaxed his muscles under her touch. Only then did he understand the great effect she had on him. The one she had and would have for the rest of his life, because he wasn’t going to let that go.
To let her go.
