“DOGTOWN”
by Jules Muck
Dubbed “Dogtown,” the once poor area of West LA including southern Santa Monica and Venice, was a major hub of surf culture and gave birth to Zephyr Surfboard Productions. It was changes in wheel technology however that soon enabled Zephyr to move into skateboarding and change the skateboard world forever—a story told in the 2001 documentary “Dogtown and Z Boys.” Close cousin to the skateboard, longboards also grew out of the surf culture and Dogtown now serves as home to Leftcoast Longboards, owned and operated by James Andrew with the help of faithful friend Mack. In 2016 Venice artist Jules Muck elevated Mack to star status with this work at Horizon Ave at Innes Pl. @muckrock @leftcoastlongboards
