that question earned thomas a withering look. admittedly, the surgeon could not exactly claim to be enjoying himself in the cold; the thin gloves he had donned for the evening did little to keep out the chill, and not even the vigorous rubbing of his hands managed to keep the fingers from going numb. the cold, however, was amply preferable to the stifling atmosphere indoors. “ you know quite well that i have no taste for these sorts of events. i should rather endure frostbite than the embarrassment of the dance floor. ”

“ if anyone asks: you did not see me here. ” perhaps it was impolite to the hosts to just sneak out onto the balcony and hide in a corner there, but alice simply had had quite enough of fortune hunters this evening and if she had to talk to one more of their lot, she’d certainly explode. there was a limit to how much shamelessness one could bear in on one social occasion. if only it were seen as a thing not to be done. “ i have regretted coming the moment i set foot inside. ”

 real understanding is brittle and rare. presuming, always dangerous. giulio looks with keen, dark eyes at some fixed point beyond the soft line of thomas’ shoulders. somewhere distantly unclear, where the air shifts and time is absent. the other expects something, maybe a story; he doesn’t loudly wish for one, but it’s limpid by the way he waits, waits, and lets a languid silence stretch.  i could tell him a thousand,  giulio bitterly consider,  or none at all.  what else is there to add?  what else but silence?  —   there’s the ferrous aftertaste of a woman’s blood in the back of his mouth, and he lets his mind linger on it. the warmth and resignation, and all that comes after fear. it tastes shallow, though perhaps it is only his own mood souring his meal.

   “i have a good memory.”   giulio only says. matter-of-factly, though his voice has an edge that threatens to crack.    “there are things you can’t forget, regardless if you want to or not. regardless if you have got revenge, or closure, or christian forgiveness.”    his tongue clicks against the vault of his palate as his gaze returns on thomas, bottomless and black as midnight. he reclines against the velvet backrest.    “which of the three do you have?”

               brows   furrow   and   eyes   focus   on   a   single   speak   of   dust   on   the   desk   .   he   misses   the   simple   days   of   collecting   bugs   in   the   garden   ,   although   he   was   a   child   then   .   life   seemed   to   be   dealing   him   many-a-bad   hand   and   matthieu   would   much   prefer   to   ignore   it   and   collect   bugs   again   .   the   weight   of   every   stress   prevents   him   now   from   his   hobbies   ,   from   his   children   ,   from   his   wife   .   life   is   much   too   troubling   .   politics   is   ever   more   so   .   ‘   i   suppose   ,   ’   the   monarch   says   ,   glancing   at   his   companion   .   ‘   i’m   not   good   at   cards   .   ’
